Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Recently Fry's Electronics in Burbank, CA sold me a Philips HDTV, 42", Philips 42PFL5704D 42" 1080P 120HZ LCD HDTV On 7/16/09 said new TV was delivered to my home at 3143 Dona Sarita Place, Studio City, CA 91604-4345 My phone number is: 3236563654 but please advise me my email if possible. The delivering Technician connected said new TV to my existing Cable Box. Said existing Cable Box was used successfully for many years with my very old previous RCA TV. My Internet Service Provider is TIME WARNER CABLE. I use Cable TV.. The service is delivered to my home by underground Cable. Then the delivering Technician simply plugged the new Philips TV into the nearest electrical wall plug. The REMOTE device I am using was used successfully with my old RCA TV for many years. Also the delivering Technician handed me another REMOTE device which is labelled near it's bottom: " PHILIPS TELEVISION". The technician advised me "Just use your old existing REMOTE hand held device to turn on the CABLE BOX". That will turn on your new TV. He said "You will only use the new additional hand held REMOTE which is labelled "PHILIPS TV" to regulate VOLUME. That is all you will use it for. OK Len, so what happened next: This is what happened. On my old Remote I pressed the "CABLE" and the new TV screen showed a picture with great color and clarity. The sound also is very good. With said old REMOTE I am able to change stations very well. The Technician advised me: "The only thing you will use the PHILIPS TELEVISION remote is for changing volume. So I tried changing volume using the PHILIPS REMOTE and it worked just fine. So up to that point I thought my new TV System was fully operational. But I got a real suprise later that night when I turned off the new TV and turned out the lights in my bedroom where the new TV is located. I turned off the TV by pressing on the HAND HELD REMOTE CABLE BUTTON. That turned off the existing CABLE BOX. Said TV screen went blank and at first I thought the TV was completely turned off because no picture was showing on the TV Screen and no sound was being delivered. But later when I went to bed, I noticed the new TV Screen still had a slight glow showing, that is it was NOT COMPLETELY DARK!! I also have an almost new 52" Samsung HDTV in my family room. And when I turn off that TV, the screen GOES COMPLETELY, DARK (BLACK), with no slight glow showing. So I had expected my new PHILIPS TV to also show a completely black screen (no slight glow) when I turned it off!!?? To prove to myself I was not imagining said slight light glow on the new PHILIPS TV, I put my hand 1/2" from the screen and I feld a slight heat on my hand from said screen!! I mused "If that PHILIPS TV screen was really fully turned off, it should not still show a slight glow and throw heat onto my hand!?? Then I asked myself, "GEE Len, what the hell are you going to do about this. I deduced I can do this. I can go to Wal-Mart store and buy a device which has multiple electrical plugs and also has a TURN OFF SWITCH ON THE DEVICE. In my bedroom, I can then plug said new device into the electrical wall plug and then plug my new TV into said "Multiple Plug" device. That switch on the Multiple Plug device would allow me to turn off any electrical power to the TV whatsoever. So if said GLOW still shows on my new TV Screen, I would simply press the switch on my new Multiple Electric Plug Device, causing all electric power being delivered to the TV TO DISAPPEAR. That, most certainly will cause my new Philips TV screen to GO COMPLETLY DARK WITH NO SLIGHT GLOW STILL SHOWING. BUT THE POINT IS THIS!!?? I DON'T HAVE TO DO ANY SUCH THING ON MY NEW 52" SAMSUNG TV IN MY FAMILY ROOM SO WHY THE HELL SHOULD I HAVE TO EVEN BOTHER WITH THIS WHATS0EVER WITH MY NEW PHILIPS TV IN MY BEDROOM. The bird-brain guys who delivered my new Philips TV should have noticed this problem right away and PREVENTED IT!! I am a REGISTERED STRUCTURAL ENGINEER IN CALIFORNIA, retired since 1984, but if I had done such grossly incompetent work in my own profession, I would, most certainly HAVE STARVED TO DEATH!! I will be 90 years old on 8/31/19. Surely I am not the only customer that this has happened to or maybe a lot of customers don't realize a slight light glow on a TV screen after the TV is turned off IS MOST CERTAINLY NOT NORMAL BEHAVIOR!! Please send me an email advising me what to do about this? Thank you for your comments and help. Sincerely Leonard Standers

Sorry to hear you had such a bad time with the new tv. I think first thing you should do is to let the store manager know what kind of work his people do and request they fix the poor installation. But I have a few things for you to check, First off when you get the "glow" it may be that the cable box is turned off but the tv is not, try to turn the set off at the set just to make sure. If this is the case then you can reprogram the cable box remote to also turn the tv off. Then try to plug the set in a different outlet just to remove that from the problem. I would also advise calling into Philps and ask them to send out a service tech due to your tv being under warranty. I hope you get a little better customer service this time, Good Luck
