1991 90hp Force. charging at 16.5 - 17 volts when running full out. Is this normal. Engine has a rectifier but not a regulator. Thanks

Very normal. That is what is gonna charge the battery. At idle it should run at 13 to 14 volts. Definatly a healthy sign man!

What is causing the battery to drain?


Running the car will drain the battery it if it's not charging ! An if your charging light is on it isn't charging ! Did you check power an grounds on the alternator ? There is a single heavier wire on the back of the alternator, this should have battery voltage ! You may want to take this to a ASE certified repair shop !
Functionality
With the ignition switch in the RUN position, voltage is applied through the warning indicator I circuit 904 (LG/RD) to the voltage regulator. This turns the regulator on, allowing current to flow from battery sense A circuit 35 (OG/LB) to the generator field coil. When the engine is started, the generator begins to generate alternating current (AC) which is internally converted to direct current (DC). This current is then supplied to the vehicle's electrical system through the output (B+) terminal of the generator.
Once the generator begins generating current, a voltage signal is taken from the generator stator and fed back to the regulator S circuit 4 (WH/BK). This voltage feedback signal (typically half the battery voltage) is used to turn off the warning indicator.
With the system functioning normally, the generator output current is determined by the voltage of the A circuit 35 (OG/LB). The A circuit 35 (OG/LB) voltage is compared to a set voltage internal to the regulator, and the regulator controls the generator field current to maintain the correct generator output.
The set voltage will vary with temperature and is typically higher in cold temperatures and lower in warm temperatures. This allows for better battery recharge in the winter and reduces the chance of overcharging in the summer.
Battery Positive Output (B+) Circuit 38 (BK/OG)
The generator output is supplied through the battery positive output (B+) terminal on the back of the generator to the battery and electrical system.
I Circuit 904 (LG/RD)
The I (ignition) circuit 904 (LG/RD) is used to turn on the voltage regulator. This circuit is powered up with the ignition switch in the RUN position. This circuit is also used to turn the charging system warning indicator on if there is a fault in the charging system operation.
A Circuit 35 (OG/LB)
The A (battery sense) circuit 35 (OG/LB) is used to sense battery voltage. This voltage is used by the regulator to determine generator output. This circuit is used to supply current to the generator field (rotor). The amount of current supplied to the rotor will determine generator output.
S Circuit 4 (WH/BK)
The S (stator) circuit 4 (WH/BK) is used to feed back a voltage signal from the generator to the regulator. This voltage is used by the regulator to turn off the charging system warning indicator. The S circuit is fed back externally on external mounted regulator generators.

    Your whole problem is the alternator is not charging , a couple tests with a volt meter would tell you !

It all depends, most bikes have a low amp rate for charging around the 1 to 1.5 A mark. What you need to check is the voltage across the battery with the engine running. The normal voltage across a battery is 12.5 to 13 volts. With the engine running you should see about 14.4 volts. Bike batteries like a low rate charge.

Check the charging voltage at the battery with the engine running, it should be about 14 volts if you have a 12 volt system or 7 if you have a 6 volt system. The voltage should be about 20% above the normal battery voltage with the engine running at about twice the idle speed, to charge it.

I think you are looking at the voltmeter, not the ammeter.

11 volts means the alternator is not charging if the engine is running. There are some conditions that exist in normal operation where the voltmeter can register 11 volts and it not be an issue, but if you are driving down the road, and only have 11 volts- the vehicle is running off the battery to keep the engine functioning for only a few miles more.

An ammeter in a car or truck has to be able to handle the full output of the alternator- which can range from 35 amps for some, up to 165 amps for others and higher. It is this reason ammeters in motor vehicles rarely have any numbers on them, just plus or minus sign, or the words charge discharge.

How can I test a riding mower regulator? (puts out 23 amps @ 3800 rpms. My dmm only goes up to 10 amps.(system won't charge battery while in operation. Can it be tested off the mower? Mower is a Craftsman...


Simplest test is to leave it on the engine, battery hooked up normally. Run the engine at normal full speed (not just idling) and use your voltmeter to measure the voltage across the battery with your DMM. If you measure 13.5 to 14 volts, your rectifier/regulator is probably OK.
It can't easily be tested off the mower. You'd need a source of AC at 24 volts to simulate the motor's stator winding, and a load that draws about 23 amps at 12 volts.
Don't forget a bad battery can cause failure to charge - it's not always the regulator.

it could well be that if its not charging the car battery up,,or it could be you have a dud battery that just wont hold its charge any more

My battery light and engine light came on while riding, what could be issue?


I would check the charging system on the bike. With the battery at full charge, start the bike and measure the voltage at the battery. Use a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) and put the red probe on the positive terminal and the black probe on the negative terminal of the battery. Put the meter in DC volts 50 volt range. When you rev the engine a bit, you should read 14.5 - 15.0 volts. If you're reading under 13 volts with the engine running, your charging system had gone out.

When I start my 2009 Chevy Silverado it shows 15 1/2 volts. Within a few minutes it goes to 12 1/2 volts. Is this normal?


This is normal, My '04 GMC, goes to around 16 at first start-up then drops to 131/2 after it runs a while.
