To date very few pieces of hardware require "always on" internet access. That being said, that day will likely come sooner than later.
Microsoft originally intended to implement that requirement for the XBox One. They only rescinded after customer outcry was too much to stay on that path. It didn't help that PlayStation released comment the day after Microsoft's intentions leaked. That comment was quick to exploit the disdain the approach garnered. Still... it is only a matter of time before this does because commonplace. It is a great tool for system and software manufacturers to limit the amount of illicitly used software.
