The turntable is connected via USB cable as the instruction advised. I have grounded it by connecting ground wire to one of the casing screws on another appliance near by, is that ok?

  • g_j7 Jul 17, 2009

I have grounded it to the case of the computer and that has not helped. The model of the turntable is an Akai ATT022U.

Thank you for your help, Greg.

Thank you so much for all your advice Lee but I think it is something I need someone to come and have a look at as I have tried just about everything and hiss is still there. It is not noise from the album it is just there all the time. I have tried it ungrounded and grounded. I have tried it through Roxio VHS to DVD software and the sound comes through but the meters don't work as I think it is overloading and I need to run it through an amplifier first, I only bought the turn table yesterday and I think it is going to beat me, maybe I need an expert to come and install it.

Thank you again for all your help, Greg.

Hi,
A lot of times this is a ground issue. Check your grounds. Does it get louder when you hit the tone arm? Also you can't go phono directly to a computer. Unless you have special hardware. Also I will need a lot more information to assist you further if this isn't the simple answer. Like how are the turntables hooked up what connections are all going to what. The grounds are the place to start though. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
Thank you,
Lee

Try and ground it to the case of the computer as that is grounded. You can use speaker wire if you need it longer. This could definitely be the problem. Also what model turntable is it. Hope this helps. If it does feel free to rate my solution at any time. If you still need assistance please let me know.
    Thanks again,
    Lee

Have you tried not having it grounded? Does the noise change at all? Have you used the turntable through any other software on the computer? Do you hear the record as well or is it only hissing? Is this turntable new and have you ever had it working?
    Thanks,
    Lee

Open up Audacity and choose “edit” from the top drop down and then
“preferences” from that menu. Once the preferences menu is open, select
audio I/O, then choose your internal sound card or on board sound for
'playback device'. Then after making sure the turntable is connected to
an empty USB port, select 'USB audio codec' from the drop down and
    then, below again, 'channels-2(stereo)'.
Have you gone through and done all these steps? Also do you have the latest version of audacity it is available here for free http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I purchased a Vibe Sound 3 Speed Turntable w/USB to PC and it does not have sound when I plug it in to the USB. The record is spining and I can hear sound from the needle.

The turntable won't make sound on its own when connected to the USB port. There are probably some drivers on the CD packed with the table that you'll need to install, and then you'll need to select the device in the Windows sound control panel. You'll also need some software to record and edit your vinyl if you want to transfer your records to CD.

I'm not familiar with the brand of turntable you have, just the ION, but it probably came bundled with some application on a CD. The ION table comes with Audacity, as well as some trial versions of audio processing (click and pop filter, hiss remover, etc.). Audacity is free, open-source software you can download here if you want it. It allows you to listen to and record your vinyl audio as wave files, then edit it, split tracks, add effects, and other fun things.

You have to listen through the Audacity software. Once you start Audacity, click on the down-arrow on the toolbar next to the microphone symbol and choose Monitor Input. You will need to do this every time you start Audacity.

Resulting mp3 files are HUGE

Are you certain that you're recording in MP3 format? That large file size seems much like .wav files than .mp3 thing.

But if that's really .mp3 file, you may need to adjust the bit rate&sampling rate.Typically, 12 kbps and 44.1 KHz would be a good starting point.

And about shrinking files you've already done, try file convert software(s) around the web(try Google it).Too many of them to recommend here. But I personally use Wavepad Sound Editor for record, edit and save files in various format.
