Point the remote at your phones camera and press a button on the remote. You should see a flicker from the infrared led on the remote. If there is no flicker then the remote is broken.
This is the technical solution, you have to open the unit: Locate IC33 and connect pin 6 to ground, connect power, and then remove the ground connection at pin 6. The unit will then boot up in factory default.

Have you tried fresh batteries? try that first , if not successful , get a digital camera and point your remote control at the lens while the camera is on, if you see a white blinking light then the remote is fine , if you see nothing buy a new remote control .. it can be a problem with the infared amp inside the dvd player if all else fails.
