Kenmore 110 washer drum spins with lid open during Rinse/Spin

Our faithful 31 year old Kenmore C110-4830070 washing machine went in a strange failure mode the other day...two "issues" at once for some reason........One...in Normal wash cycle the tub will fill with water no problem...then the agitator appears to have trouble moving back and forth....very slow...and at the same time the drum is trying to turn clockwise?....slowly at first but it tries to pick up speed.....agaitator barely moves....so I set it to Rinse/Spin to at least get the water drained out to troubleshoot the problem...then noted problem Two...that the water drains okay and the drum will pick up speed to get rid of the water (as it would during Rinse/Spin) but as additional issue, I noted that opening the lid has no effect and the drum just spins away at high speed ...yikes..whereas normally if you open the lid the drum stops quickly....this problem occurred all of a sudden out of the blue...tested lid switch with a multi-meter for continuity thinking it was shorted but switch opens/closes okay...but has no effect on the drum spinning away at high speed if you open the lid....I pulled out the timer (replaced in 2005) and checked wiring and connectors all over and found nothing wrong......any thoughts?...I'd rather not get rid of "old faithfu" if I can fix her up.....theres an answer there staring me in the face but I'm outta ideas....many thanks if anyone can help out.....

Slow agitator could be linked to shaft bearings going south. Pull the agitator off and check the block on top of the shaft. With everything turned off, try to turn the shaft. It should turn freely both ways. Other things to slow down the works could be a very worn drive belt from the motor.
The lid switch problem seems to be a wiring short--trace the wiring back from the switch to where ever it ends up (at the timer?). If it winds up at a relay, the contacts may be stuck together. It would be nice to have a wiring diagram--ah well. Don't know if any of this helps, good luck.

Kenmore 110 washer fills and does the wash cycle but wont drain or spin. Totally shuts down after wash cycle. What do I need to replace

sounds as though the lid switch has gone bad, either that or the motor has lost the reverse winding on it.. most likely lid switch tho.
the lid switch is only "seen" by some older kenmore "110" series at the end of the wash cycle, or end of the rinse cycle. it purpose is to keep the unit from spinning if the lid is opened so no one looses an arm, etc.
generally the console on those machines hinges over backward so you can remove the cabinet top and 3 sides as a unit together..
the lid switch is under the machine top and isn't easily accessible without removing the cabinet.

I filled my washing machine with clothes tonight and it got to the end of the short cold wash cycle and had stopped running so I pushed in the knob then pulled it back out and then pushed it back in and...

It sounds as if the machine doesn't spin during the spin cycle. Normally the agitator stops spinning, fairly quickly, if the lid is opened during the spin cycle. That safety circuit includes a switch mounted under the opening and is set by a tab on the lid that protrudes thru a small hole in the top of the washer. The most likely failure on most Kenmore models is that switch, broken or loose, the tab on the lid broken, or the two misaligned. I would need the model number of your washer, located on a tag on the bottom of the lid to be more specific

Won't spin, makes clunking noise, drains fine

If it agitates fine , with normal noise , drains with lid closed , then the problem is probably the transmission .

Washer will not spin but will wash and rinse butr not spin

Hello jammob
Welcome to fixya.
I'm Huuum and happy to assist you,

You said, your washer will not spin ,but will wash and rinse but not spin

WASHER WON'T SPIN

• Is the drain hose clogged, or the end of the drain hose
more than 96 in. (244 cm) above the floor? See the
Installation Instructions for proper installation of drain hose.
• Is the lid open? The lid must be closed during operation.
Washer will not agitate or spin with the lid open.
• Is there excessive sudsing? Always measure detergent.
Follow manufactureCs directions. If you have very soft water,
you might need to use less detergent.

If none of the above resolves the problem try this!

How old is the range?
And the model number?

Threat it like an error code.
This can reset the system.
pull the plug out to cut the power for 5 minutes. (If you can not reach the plug turn the breaker off).
Then restart the washer.

It's like rebooting your computer when its acting strange!
Usually it corrects some error problems if they are not serious.
Or they are sometimes just a glitch.

If this does not remedy the problem, then the lid switch could be bad.
Let me know how it works out.
Please remember to leave arating when you are finished
Thank you
Huuum

KENMORE 110 -LETS WATER IN..DOES NOT SPIN

Hello Sylvia,

You said,
HELLO...I HAVE A KENMORE 110 WASHER, LETS WATER IN BUT DOES NOT SPIN. PLEASE HELP. SYLVIA

It pumps, but doesn't spin If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these:

* The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin.
The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

* The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small,
relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

* A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts.
If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)

* The clutch may be worn. If your washer is a GE, it may use a clutch to come up to the proper spin speed.
As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the unit from spinning well or at all.
If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified
appliance repair technician.

* The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor.
For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other.
It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other.
If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

* The transmission may not be shifting properly. Older washers produced by Whirlpool®
have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective,
the unit may drain the water but not spin. This is a complex system, if your washer has a shifter problem,
you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

* The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized.
These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem,
you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.

It spins only with the lid closed For safety,
washing machines are made so that they spin only with the lid closed.
The lid switch prevents the spinning action when the lid is up."

Please give me a good rating for the sound advice , before you sign off.
Thank You

Kenmore Washer Spin Issue - Need help troubleshooting

Check the coils on the wig-gag. Its a couple of bars that engage the spin drive or the wash drive. If you look at the machine when its running you will see it moving back and forth, hence the name. If the coil engages the spin cam, but it still will not spin then the tranny is your next culprit.
