This is the way it was designed. Kodak uses pigment-based inks for these printers, and the colors simply are not as vibrant as dye-based inks. Kodak tech support told me this directly, and that's the way it goes. You might do better if you experiment with different papers, but if you just want it to print quality color documents like a good old HP, you are out of luck.

By the way, there were many horrifying design decisions made on these 5000 series printers. One of the worst is that if you are out of ink, the scanner doesn't work. Nothing works. You can't even turn it off. All by design according to Kodak... Ridiculous!

Their software is also extremely poor and slow. I tried removing it through add/remove programs on one machine, and it wouldn't remove, it would just go through the installation procedure.

I've kept my 5500, but it sucks. I'd love to throw it away and buy a real printer, but I am too cheap.

Good luck.

How to change the ink cartridge

Follow these instructions when you need to replace print cartridges.

• Everyday printing: Use a black cartridge along with a tri-color cartridge.
• Color photos: Use a photo cartridge along with a tri-color cartridge.
To replace the print cartridges
1. Make sure the HP All-in-One is on.
CAUTION: If the HP All-in-One is off when you open the print cartridge door to
access the print cartridges, the HP All-in-One will not release the cartridges for
changing. You might damage the HP All-in-One if the print cartridges are not
docked safely when you try to remove them.
2. Make sure you have letter or A4 unused plain white paper loaded in the input tray.
3. Open the print cartridge door.
The print carriage moves to the far right side of the HP All-in-One.
4. Wait until the print carriage is idle and silent, and then lightly press down on a print
cartridge to release it.
If you are replacing the tri-color print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from the
slot on the left.
If you are replacing the black or photo print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from
the slot on the right.
1 Print cartridge slot for the tri-color print cartridge
2 Print cartridge slot for the black and photo print cartridges
5. Pull the print cartridge towards you out of its slot.
6. If you are removing the black print cartridge in order to install the photo print cartridge,
store the black print cartridge in the print cartridge protector or an airtight plastic
container.
7. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging and, being careful to touch only
the black plastic, gently remove the plastic tape by using the pink pull tab.
1 Copper-colored contacts
2 Plastic tape with pink pull tab (must be removed before installing)
3 Ink nozzles under tape
CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Also, do
not re-tape the print cartridges. Doing so can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad
electrical connections.
8. Hold the print cartridge with the HP logo on top, and insert the new print cartridge into
the empty cartridge slot. Make sure you push the print cartridge in firmly until it snaps
into place.
If you are installing the tri-color print cartridge, slide it into the left slot.
If you are installing a black or photo print cartridge, slide it into the right slot.
9. Close the print cartridge door.greatcir.png

How can I print a color picture without using a black catridge?

Black ink is an essential part of the printing process. The black color is only made by the black cartridge, the color cartridge does make "black".
One or more optional photo cartridges may be available, depending on your printer model.
  • Use the photo cartridge with a tri-color cartridge for best-quality color photos and graphics, and sepia or antique photos.
  • Choose a gray photo cartridge to print black and white photos with truer grays and richer blacks.

Ink Color Issues

Did you change any of the configurations on your printer. Most photo printers have color settings that are media dependent. It sounds like you might have it set to print on regular paper but not on photo paper. There are a lot of settings that you can accidentally change on a printer so I would suggest uninstalling the printer then reinstalling it and see if that is the issue.

Printing too dark

Check the properties of the printer in Windows, make sure it's not using any odd color profiles. My Epson uses E411__1 as it's color profile. There might also be brightness and contrast sliders in the printing preferences that you can adjust or return to default.
