If even a new battery is not getting charges this could be a possible motherboard issue. Try charging the battery on another laptop and once it is more than 10 % charges go to www.dellsupport.com and get the latest BIOS for the computer. You might have to save and right click on the file and select RU NAS ADMINISTRATOR in Vista. If the issue is the same after the BIOS update it surely is a motherboard issue. If in warranty Dell will replace the board.

Dell inspirion 1501 laptop, not charging battery light showing red, have bought a new mains adaptor but still not charging

Does the back dc jack seem loose when you have the ac adapter plugged into it? Wiggle the cord right where it plugs into the laptop. If it moves around then most likely the dc jack on the inside has one of it's 3 points of contact broken. This means that someone would need to re-solder that contact or put a whole new jack into the laptop. Another thing to try is replacing the battery. Sometimes they won't charge because they are bad. Another thing to try is take the battery out, plug it into the adapter, turn it on, get into windows, shut down, put battery back in, turn on. See if that resets the battery and makes it charge.

My 1501 won't turn on. I tried a new adapter but

when you pulg the original adapter, it works right? so technically there's no problem with your original adapter, maybe the problem is the battery. how old is you laptop, usually the life span of a battery is good for 1 year. try replacing the battery. hope this will help.

Laptop not turning on

If you replace the main battery and it will not charge, make sure the AC adapter is working (You can test the output with a multimeter) and make sure the LED on the Adapter stays on when connected to the system. Most likely, the motherboard has failed and will need replacement

My Dell Inspiron laptop won't power up. There are no lights AT ALL. It worked when I left for holiday. I have bought a new AC/DC power unit: just the same. The green light comes on when I plug the AC/DC...

If the light on the A/C adapter "goes out" when you connect it to the Laptop... then your motherboard is bad.

Your motherboard is "shorting out" the A/C adapter, in which case you will need a new motherboard.

Sorry....

Dell Inspiron 1501 will not boot with battery or adapter

Take the battery out and try with AC only, if no change, then you will likely need a motherboard replacement

Replacement adapter will not charge battery

Did the old one do the same thing? If true, your battery sounds like it is dead.

Replacement battery for Dell Inspiron 1501 won't charge

If your old battery was doing the same (not charging), then is is because the charger is not charging the battery. Do you have a friend with a Dell laptop? Maybe you can use a borrowed charger to test and see if it will charge the batteries. To answer your question , no Dell does not have anything built in to prevent you from using a 3rd party battery.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
