The blue screen of death (BSOD) as they call it, usually comes up from a hardware error or incorrect corrupted driver (hardware or OS).

Did it occur after updating a driver or after installing hardware?

Things to try--

1. If you have recently installed hardware, read the compatitbly of the hardware you are installing and your computer, remove the hardware and reinstall it.

2. If it is a Windows error, Press F8 during boot up and select "Last Known Good Configuration" from the list displayed.

3. If it is a driver issue, Press F8 during boot up and select "Safe Mode" to rollback drivers.

4. If you have a recent backup of you computer on an external storage device, Press F8 durring boot up and elect "Windows Recovery Tool" from the list to install your backup. If "Windows Recovery Tool" is not on the list, you will need to install it from your Windows OS CD. You can do this by inserting the CD in to CD driver before boot up.

Please help, i was give a used Dell inspiron

The only way to bypass the BIOS password on a Dell Portable, is with either the original password or with the assistance of Dell Tech Support to generate a master password. From your post, You indicate that you could not verify ownership information registered on the system, and Tech Support would not assist. So you need to get the previous registered owner's information and submit a change of ownership here: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/change_order/tag_transfer?c=us&cs=2684&l=en&s=pub&~ck=anavml
If you cannot get the previous owner's data then you only option is replace the motherboard. (There is no hardware setting that will allow you to bypass a set BIOS password)

How to install xp in dell

you must first tell the computer to boot from the cd and not the hard drive. this is done-> turn the computer on when you see any word it the top right hand corner push F2 on you keyboard. that will get you into the setup. your looking for boot sequence use your arrow keys (mouse doesn't work yet) when you find it hit Enter now you want to put the CD/Rom in the boot first position select it with the arrow keys and use the letter U (up) & D (you got it -down) to put in the first spot.
then hit ENTER then ESC...exit and save
then put the disc in the cd player and reboot...the follow the instructions...it's pretty straight forward.
If you need more help...ask again. Hope this helps

You have to include your SATA driver into XP. Otherwise it wont detect your Hard drive. You may need a utility called nlite to do this.
I found this article very helpful to install XP on my inspiron
