I have the same problem. You have to wait for the bars to show good reception, then dial.

I'm having the same problem too. Except this is a new phone, I just placed the battery in it yesterday and charged it for 5hrs as stated. I followed the instructions and nothing is happening either. I get the same error. I ialed the number with the 1-618 and the 618 and even witout the area code.. I'm puzzled. I have no landline/home phone this is my very first cell phone and can't call safelink.com ugh frustrating.

Call your service provider and ask if the call you are trying to make is within your plan, if it is check to make sure that you are dialing the right area code, if nothing else the last thing i would do is take out the battery for about 10 minutes and put it back in to see if it needed to be reset.

I have the same problem with my Motorola tracfone. After fooling with it for about one hour, I discovered that for some strange reason, if you turn the phone off. When you turn it back on, you have to wait about 8-10 minutes and then all calls go through with no -34 restriction.
