Measure and record the resistance of the elements. attach an ohmmeter to the (unplugged) power cord and push down the toast loading mechanism. wire the elements up until you get the same reading on the ohmmeter you got when ohming the elements out individually. Then make sure the ohmmeter reads open when the toast loader mechanism is deactivated. Then make real sure that the hot side of the ac power plug (the smaller plug) is not electrically connected to the case of the unit. Take the unit outside on a fireproof base and run an extension cord to it but leave it unplugged. Better yet use a switching power socket if you have one. Load it with toast and actuate the toast loading mechanism. Stand away from the unit and power it up. You may want to run it several times to eliminate any smoke from it due to contamination. Be aware that any finger acids or other contaminants on the elements will shorten their lifespan so you might want to clean it and let it dry thoroughly before use.
