I will have to buy another pc.I cannot wait for this to be fixed. I am in Austria so it,s not so easy getting one in english with an american key board.

If I was to buy another pc with close to the same specs as this dv5 what would you suggest...

I would like to stay with Vista .Not necesserely HP.

I bought the dv5 in New Zealand so I may have to order this one online and have it sent.

There is nothing wrong with flash bios getting corrupt. It can always be re-written. But it cannot be done by a normal user or a normal repair shop owner. Since the chip is EEPROM it can be re-programmed by using its writer. Kindly let me know your location in newzealand so i can suggest where you shall go for this repair.

If the bios update had been interrupted then BIOS is damaged, and motherboard will not start anymore.

If the computer is still booting, even if not passing the complete POST, then you can try restarting the Update using a Bios update CD.

If the computer does not start at all, then the motherboard is fried.

If this was a desktop you could still try using an eeprom programmer device like this to store bios image. On your laptop this operation is even more difficult, you have to take it apart and access the eprom with the bios to remove it from board. Chances to damage the laptop are very high, at that point is more convenient to replace the motherboard.

I am afraid that the best solution is contacting HP and having a quote on repair to have the motherboard replaced, they do not bother in reflashing the bios Eprom.

Regards.

I have a HP Pavilion dv6-3120us Entertainment Notebook. A update came from HP for the BIOS and while installing the update, it will not finish. Its frozen at 100% can you assist?

your options are wait for it to complete. Or power cycle it and hops it froze on downloading, and not during installing.

Manually download the bios update yourself and then flash it manually if it does come back up.

If the computer fails to boot up then you will need to use a recovery bootdisc and then to apply the bios update again manually as opposed to doing it in windows.

My hp laptop battery shows 100% but will not power up the computer

If you are using a dv series pavilion Notebook and is preinstalled with Windows XP, you need to download the HP Battery Health Check utility from the link below and run in the Notebook to know the status of the Battery :
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp41501-42000/sp41862.exe

Follow the instructions to perform Battery Check in the Notebook :
Insert the AC power adapter into the notebook PC and plug directly into a wall outlet.

Click StartAll Programs, then click Hewlett-PackardHP Battery Check.

If the Battery health status is good, I recommend you to check with updating the BIOS by checking with the Product Number of the Notebook.

HP Pavillion dv9500t lcd screen is extremly dark. I can barely see anything once it is booted up. I can hook up an external monitor and the laptop functions properly with exception of the laptop screen....

From the Windows desktop, hold the fn key and press the f7 key c00776226.jpg to increase or the f8 key c00776225.jpg to decrease the brightness of the display. If using the function keys does not resolve the problem and you have a Lid Actuator on your particular model, check the movement of the Lid Actuator switch to determine that it moves freely and is not stuck. NOTE: The key numbers ( f7 or f8 ) may vary depending on the notebook PC; however, the images on the keys should be familiar. Check the movement of the Lid Actuator switch The Lid Actuator switch is available on some models. It is a small button or switch located above the keyboard near the hinge for the LCD. Pressing this switch when the computer is on may turn the notebook display off, or it may cause the notebook to enter a different power state. Press the switch two to three times while observing the display. If the display does not return to normal brightness when the switch is released, the switch may be sticking and need to be repaired. Contact HP service and support for further assistance. If the display turns off when the switch is pressed, the power management function may be set to hibernate or turn off when the lid is closed. Install updated BIOS and drivers To resolve certain hardware and software issues, use HP Health Check to automatically search the HP web site for an updated BIOS as well as any updated software and drivers. To launch HP Health Check, follow the steps below.
  1. Click Start , type health into the search field, and then select HP Health Check from the list. HP Health Check displays a list of available BIOS, software, and driver updates for your particular model.
  2. Click the description link for any BIOS, software, or driver updates, and then follow the on-screen instructions. You can only install one update at a time.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 above for all updates that you want to install.
You have now installed the available BIOS, software, and driver updates for your particular computer model.

Backlight only stays on for a few seconds on compaq c700 that is only a year old

When the external AC power supply is unplugged from a notebook, the LCD display will dim to conserve on battery power. During times of heavy battery power operation; such as during the startup or boot process, the display may be very dim or barely readable. If the display remains dim when the notebook is operating on the Windows desktop, follow the steps below to resolve problems with display brightness Restart the notebook with AC power Follow the steps below to determine if the dim display is due to a hardware failure:
  1. Connect the AC adapter to the notebook and a working electrical outlet.
  2. Power down the notebook PC by pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds.
  3. Press the power button again to start the computer.
If the display is still dim after restarting with the AC adapter connected, try changing the LCD brightness. Adjust the LCD brightness using the function keys From the Windows desktop, hold the fn key and press the f7 key c00776226.jpg to increase or the f8 key c00776225.jpg to decrease the brightness of the display. I am afraid to inform you that your Notebook needs to be replaced.

As BIOS is the basic software (firmware) which will be interacting with all the Hardware in the Notebook, it may not be possible to do anything if it is erased from the BIOS ROM Chip.

However, there are few service centers around who will be able to Flash the BIOS so that you will be able to use it.

Actually, we are not supposed to even touch the Notebook when the BIOS is being flashed in Notebook like yours.

However, in latest HP Notebooks, the BIOS is being provided as Winflash which can be flashed within the Operating System by double clicking it.

Hope this helps...
