Yep same issue. The camera won't focus in any mode and asks to be turned off and on again. Lens also won't retract when turned off. The review mode still seems to work. Restoring all the settings has no effect.

Is it possible to fix the focus in video modus especielly when shooting from moving car

Can you be more specific? please tell us whet camera you are using and what settings you chose.
Focusing through a window always is difficult, because sometimes the camera has direct pictures and sometimes reflections. Also when moving, the camera has a tough job, focusing. But please tell us more details.

When I press the shutter half-way, it is my understanding I should see a red light in the window telling me it is focused....there's no light. Also, my BEEP is turned ON, but it never beeps??? Canon...

The Canon Rebel XS is a digital camera not film. Most of your problems may stem back to not having a media card installed. Here is a great link for the Canon EOS Rebel XS showing important functions If you have a media card installed and it has been formatted to the camera then the red light you mention will only flicker for an instant on your focus point, you got to be pretty quick to see it. The in focus light you want to see is a small green dot in the lower right corner of the viewfinder. This "green dot" needs to be solidly lit not flickering. When the camera has achieved focus the "beep" should sound, I suspect you haven't reached focus yet. Not focusing could be as simple as having the lens switch set to manual focus or the camera set to manual focus.

I am trying to take pictures of pennies and I can't get the camera to focus and get a clear picture. Do you have any ideas?

All cameras have a minimum focal length. That is the minimum distance they have to be from an object in order to focus clearly. If you have a digital camera with changeable lenses, that minimum focal length is determined by the lens and how it is constructed. If you have a fixed lens digital camera then the manual should tell you what the minimum focal length is.

One other thing to keep in mind is that on most fixed lens digital cameras, there is what is called a macro setting. If you switch to macro mode, it will allow you to get closer to the object and still get a good focus. Your manual should tell you how to turn on that mode.

Camera wont take snap

Because the camera has Mechanical Focus the camera button has 2 Pressures, Holding The first 1/2 of the button press will enable to Mechanical Focus to work, And then once the green dot is shown telling you its in focus, pressing the button all the way down will then take your picture !

There are two stages to the shutter release. The first stage is the focus stage pressed half way down and the second stage is the actual shutter release. Always press the shutter half way to get the camera focused first then press all the way down when the camera is ready to take the shot. Check to see how the settings are with regard to how it focuses (9-point, face recognition, etc). When the camera focuses you should get a green box or multiple green boxes depending on your settings. That tells you the camera is ready to take the picture. Pressing the shutter all the way down at once from the beginning will cause the pause you describe since the camera has to first focus then shoot the picture. Depending on the subject or subjects the camera may take a second or two longer to focus. With good lighting my G9 focuses pretty fast. Hope this helped.

What am I doing wrong?

This depends on which Autofocus system that particular model uses.  Then manual should tell what is happening there- there is usually a more comprehensive manual on the supplied CD.
Failing that speak to the user support of you particular model

Suddenly it doesn`t focus

try resetting your camera. In record mode press menu. go to setup tab go up to reset press right arrow highlight reset press set. If that doesn't work Call the repairs center at 800-706-2534 and then keep choosing option 1. Tell them what's going on and that you would like to send it in for repairs. If they ask just lie and tell them you already talked to tech support. LOL
