Nope, there's no E code on the display. I just get the black copies. I will definitely check what you guys suggested. Thanks for the info.

Yes, it sounds as if the lamp has blown. These are halogen lamps on the older models and run over $100 to $150 or more depending on the make. Usually if you take the platten glass off, you can slide the scanner over and see where the screws that mount the lamp end contact down are. BE SURE TO UNPLUG THE MACHINE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANYTHING, ESPECIALLY IN THE SECTION, OR ANYTIME YOU TAKE ANY COVER OR PANEL OFF!!!!!!!!! The halogen lamps use 120v ac and will bite! They are very delicate lamps, and you cannot touch them, or the oil in your skin will cause it to blow again...an expensive mistake. make sure the contacts are in place well before you finish. And make sure to check your existing lamp on a meter for continuity... to mke sure it is blown and not just a bad lamp board. Yes, it's all very tricky and kinda dangerous, that's why we charge "so much" in the service industry.
Good luck, and you may find it cheaper to just replace the machine with a lesser make from a local dealer or office supply company.

Guru Guy is on the right track but I am not sure about the price.

  1. Do you get any E code on the display?
  2. There is also a thermal fuse in series with the exposure lamp to prevent overheating.
  3. Also check the 120v scanner cable, they have been know to crack.
Let me know if I can be any help mediaman85@mchsi.com

    • Unplug machine

    • Revove platen glass

    • pull out scanner assembly

    • remove reflector

    • Lamp is held in by two leaf springs

check resistance on the fuse and lamp... probably get them at Katun or any other aftermarket parts warehouse.

Print is fully black

often when the exposure lamp burns out, all your copies will come out black. The light reflects off the immage to the drum to create the copy to be printed to the paper. If the light is out, all the drum will see is a black image to be printed. Make a copy with the cover open, and see if the light turns on.

Why does my toshiba e-studio 161 prints black?

The scanner unit is damaged. Check for busted exposure lamp while making scans. There should be light on the glass where you put the original copies while scanning for copies ..

Why are my copies coming out solid black, even though my exposure lamp is still working?

A couple of possibilities. Basically if your exposure lamp is coming on, the light is not getting all the way to the drum that is in the toner cartridge. It could be you have a mirror out of place. When the exposure lamp comes on, the light is reflected off the original and then off a series of mirrors until it gets to the drum. If one of the mirrirs has been knocked out of place, like due to a recent cleaning then that would cause black copies. The more common cause would be the drum protection "gate" that is on top of the toner cartridge is closed and thus blocking any light from getting to the drum. You can slide out the toner cartridge and look on top. There is a gate or panel that flips open to be able to see the drum. This gate must be opened when installing the toner. Also it is possible to have a bad cartridge but that rarely causes completely black copies.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Out going fax is coming black

FIRST test copying. if the copy come out completely black, then the exposure or scanner lamp or contact image sensor is dead, not lighting on. Now if the copy has black only black lines on it,then you can clean the place where the document passes thru where the light of the exposure lamp projects unto the text of the document being scan, which is the small glass on the left side of the platen glass when you open the auto document feeder.NOTE: Lay your document on top of the platen glass & make copy if the copy come out clean as you needed it,then the lamp is O.K. Then the small glass just need to be clean. If the copy is completely "BLACK", then the lamp is dead, or the circuit that control it. In thus case then you need a technician to do it

Black Copies

It could be a bad voltage board, which is not supplying enough power to the lamp.
