Question about Dell OptiPlex GX260 PC Desktop

2 Answers

I have dell Optiplex GX260 with pentiumR 4 CPU 2ghz an 2g RAM. I have a separate seagate 200 g harddrive coupled to it. I tend to leave a lot of programmes open at one time mainly inetrnet stuff and just recently I notice that a lot of the programmes are running very slow, and I'm getting a lot of lock ups which eventually clear if I leve them, but take ages to do so. I noticed today that the task manager was showing very high cpu useage and even hit 100% on one occasion. I need to know how to sort out this issue or do I just dump this pc for a new one with better spec? best Rob

I would suggest rebooting more often as the OS has memory leaches that slow the computer down over time. Rebooting clears this up. Its a pain but works. Also remove programs using the program removal in the control panels as it will clear unneeded software that may be running on your computer. Backing up important files and doing a clean install is the best way to get rid of nasty malware that finds its way from the internet to your computer.

A new system of course would be way faster but money is money, what is your time worth to put into this computer? is it worth wasting or get a new computer?

Please try to reduce some of the system load by closing programs after using them.
also please turn off file indexing option this will greatly improve your system performace.

Here is a link to a manual for this computer.

Look where it states Diagnostics lights and see if the light patterns in the back panel lights match any on the list. It might help you on pin pointing your issue. If it is a memory issue and you have already replaced it then it is the motherboard.

Why does a 1GB DDR PC2700 333MHz RAM show as 32Mb in a Dell Optiplex GX260.I want to upgrade from the existing 256Mb and hopefully run the two RAM together

Hi,
It is because this computer only supports 200 or 266 MHZ SDRAM modules. The one that you are trying to install is not compatible.

A new power supplu can't hurt anything so long as it's right for your Dell. Some Dells with ATX power connectors are wired in a propiretary way. Make sure which way yours is wired before making the buy.
