Running is just a form of exercise like others, but it is ******* your leg joints, especially if you start right into it when overweight. It isn't magical.

Any exercise which gets your heart rate up a bit and makes you a little bit breathless will do it, especially if you cut back also on

alcohol
sugary food
starchy food
fatty food
salty food

    Walking is much easier on your body although you have to walk twice as far as running to lose same amount of weight.That being said its way better on the body to walk briskly due to the adverse affect of running on knees, ankles,feet, etc. Have fun & enjoy.

Walking ... instead of driving the car to the local shops
parking the car further away and walking
walking on a treadmill as you can note the speed and time and increase these over a period of time.

Running is hard when you are over weight it is very hard if you have a gut as it bounces.
Walking for at least 30 minutes a day and building up the speed over a period of time and the distance.

you have to gradually build up your fitness maybe running when you feel fitter but not straight away it is ******* your heart and joints when you are unfit and overweight.

Although, running is not considered to be a well-known exercise for weight loss but it can help you to burn extra calories which ultimately result in weight loss. It doesn't much matter whether you are using treadmill or not. Along with running do care about your diet.

Geoff, and Brett are spot on.you will cause more problems running overweight. Get a bike start slow. I know from experience. I was up and down 70-75 pounds all my life, and now really dealing with joint problems,ie: arthritis.
