Sounds like the gears that control the rollers are not connecting well and/ or slipping..
Could be a broken guide that holds a gear in place..
If so - not a real easy fix unless your quite technical..
It is older with allot of use ?
Perhaps try unplugging it for several minuets in hopes to clear it..
Also - open the faxing part on top (not sure which printer you are referring to) and clean it out with air pressure - with a air-can.. Air pressure on the rollers & any gears you see..

Hope this helps ;o)

My HP J6480 ADF is making a grinding noise when I try and fax or copy documents fed thru the ADF. I have tried cleaning the rollers but that hasn't worked. Any other suggestions?

You need to locate, from where sound is coming from.
Then use wd40 or silicone grease oil, and lubricate.
its probably dirt on axis bushings.

Gears grinding with Brother Intellifax 4100

Does it only make the noise when printing. Do you hear the noise when sending out faxes? I have heard grinding noises onlt when using poor quality toner refills, or the fuser gear and or drive gear asm is stripped. First try a known good OEM toner.
