Question about HP Jetdirect 170x Print Server

HP750c Plus, with Jetdirect j2552a or j4100n not working.

I have an HP750c Plus, but when I put in a Jetdirect Card j2552a, it cannot be found on the network. It might be because its an old MIO and my new switch cannot communicate with it?

When I install a Jetdirect J4100n, the front panel just goes blank after initializing.. has anyone experience this problem before?Any solutions?

    The first one I think might be it!! I do get a link light, but then everything else goes off/shuts down. Contacted the guy who sold me the jetdirect and will be replacing it.

Here's a few troubleshooting steps that should help you out.

1. Are you getting a link light? If not, check the cable and the switch - if these are OK then you have a bad JetDirect.

2. Print a test sheet from the 750 and check the IP configuration. Be sure that you have an IP address that is on the same subnet as the computer you want to print from. If not, then you either need to configure an appropriate static IP or configure DHCP for the MIO and make sure it is working.

3. Once you have the IP worked out, try to ping the MIO from your PC. You can also try to connect to the MIO using the embedded web server if the firmware is recent enough. If either of these work then you should be in good shape. Try to re-install and see if it works.

One last thing, if you are printing directly to the plotter from the client computer without using a print server then one part of the setup is non-intuitive. When you are asked if the printer is local or network, you have to select "local" even though this is clearly not the case. Then when you get to choose a port, create a new TCP port.

Good luck and if the above doesn't help, post an update and we'll take it from there.

Bought the HP750C/Plus from work (it worked fine)


Can be tricky... DO NOT use a USB/parallel convertor. Either use USB only or parallel only to connect to your computer. I would NOT attemp to use a USB/serial convertor either.

If your computer does not have a parallel then best plan is to get an old PC with parallel connector and transfer data to it to be sent to the Designjet.

My HP designjet 1055 cm plus keeps giving a system error of: 0000D8 005D0273. How do I fix this?


This could be one of two things. It's either a firmware fault or a problem with the JetDirect card in the back of the printer. First of all, power the unit off, remove the Jetdirect network card then power it on again. If the error is no longer present i would recommend replacing the jetdirect network card. If it's a 615 jetdirect then this could very well be the fault because they are very prone to causing spurious errors on various printers.If it still fails then it is more than likely to be the Firmware simm on the main control board.

This is an IO error. If there is a Hard Disk installed, remove it - the printer will run fine without it. If that does not solve the problem, remove the JetDirect card and run the test print. Is it possible to use a Canon inkjet printer (parallel interface) on the Jetdirect ex plus?


Yes. The Jetdirect ex plus supports nearly all parallel printers. Makes no difference who made the printer.

Only if you want to print by way of the network rather than by directly connecting to a single computer. Otherwise you can safely leave this alone.

Hp 5500 dtn won't initilize


1. Make sure the rear fan is running, indicating the system is operational.
2. Verify that the firmware DIMM and the formattter are seated and operating properlty,
3. Remove any Jetdirect or other EIO cards, Then try to reinit the printer again (Turn the printer back on).

I have found that if the Jetdirect card goes bad that it will halt the init proccess on the printer.

you can find out if the Jetdirect card is working just by typing in the IP address for the embedded web server

Assuming the JetDirect card is installed and properly functioning, use the following. Also, you may have to update the rom on the I/O Card to the latest version.


  1. From the front control panel message, Ready or Ready to Plot, press ENTER.
  2. Press the Up arrow key until I/O Setup appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. Press the Up arrow key until Modular appears, and then press ENTER.
  4. From the front control panel message, Cfg Network=No, press ENTER.
  5. Press the Up arrow key to change to Yes, and then press ENTER.
  6. Using the Arrow keys, scroll to Cfg TCP/IP=No appears, and then press ENTER.
  7. Scroll to Yes, and press ENTER.
  8. Press the Up arrow key until BootP=Yes appears, and press ENTER.
  9. Press the Up arrow key to change to No. Press ENTER (When using BootP or DHCP, keep the setting BOOTP = YES *. The BootP or DHCP server will configure the TCP/IP parameters on the HP Jetdirect. No other TCP/IP configuring is necessary.
  10. Press the UP arrow once to get to the IP byte section.
  11. To change the IP byte, proceed as follows:
    1. Press ENTER.
    2. Press the Up or Down arrow key to change the number.
    3. Press ENTER.
    4. Press the Up key to continue to IP Byte2=xxx.
    5. Press ENTER.
  12. Configure the remaining bytes of the IP address in the same manner. A valid IP address is required for proper operation.
  13. Configure the subnet mask bytes (SM), syslog server IP address (LG), default gateway (GW), and timeout (TIMEOUT) by pressing the ENTER and the Up or Down arrows in the same manner as above. The timeout parameter default is 90 seconds. Up to 3,600 seconds can be configured. If set to zero, the timeout feature of the HP Jetdirect print server is disabled; TCP/IP connections will remain open until closed by the server.
  14. Press PREVIOUS repeatedly, until the Ready to Plot or Ready message appears. Refer to the HP Jetdirect Network Interface Configuration Guide to configure the network operating system.
  15. Press the Up and Down arrow keys simultaneously to save the IP address on a 750/755 plotter. (A page should print and the IP addresses will be saved.)

My HP laserjet 5 was showing erro 80 Service 011E. I took out the Jetdirect 400N Card. Error went away and it started working. When I put the card back, the error 80 reapears. I don't use this printer on a...


Leave the card out, no harm, just no network.
If card is fried, more likely will cause damage if you don't remove it.

If you want network connectivity, these cards can be found on ebay for as little as $10
