Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

My 650GB WD external hard drive has suddenly stopped powering up. The blue light flashes once & then there is nothing. It doesn't show as connected to my laptop either. I've tried switching to other outlets and another laptop but still doesn't work. Why would this be?

This can be caused by a few things. Either send it in to be fixed if its under warranty. Or take it apart to get at the hard drive inside and try and plug it in internally to retrieve your files.
Thanks,

When I plug I my WD hard drive, the blue lights flash for a few seconds, and then it goes off. Any ideas what could be the problem?

If it is new contact WD for a solution under warranty. If not, go to My Computer in Windows and look to see that the drive shows up in the list.

Lacie Case Only lighting up when HD is disconnected

I had the same problem with a 1TB hard drive. The fault was caused by the casing being knocked from the computer and falling onto the desk. If the hard drive hadn't been powered up it would have been ok...
I removed the hard drive from the casing and fitted it into my computer as a slave drive, hoping to access all the music and movies stored in it. No go .. But, it's worth you fitting your hard drive as a slave and trying the same. It's worth a shot.
I took the hard drive to a computer market here in China, where I work. These guys take hard drives apart to fix them, if possible. They couldn't fix my hard drive as it had been powered on when it fell ..
However, I bought a new desktop hard drive and they were able to transfer 95% of all things from the old hard drive to the new one. The cost of transferring from the old hard drive to the new hard drive was the same as the price of the new hard drive. That specialist service doesn't come cheap ... but it can be done. I paid simply because I didn't want to lose what had taken more than a year to download.
Try fitting your hard drive as a slave to see if you can access the information on it. If not, a new hard drive and the cost of transferring your music from your old hard drive may be the only course of action left open to you

Hi, i am using an internal HDD of WD 320 gigs. it has all of a sudden stopped workin ang givin a weird noise and when i turn my computer on it shows a blue colored error window

This is called a 'blue screen' and is notorious in the computer community as the indication of a debilitating problem that your computer is suffering from. There are very many things that can cause a blue screen or a blue screen crash, but you can attempt resetting your BIOS to try to correct the blue screen. If this doesn't work, I recommend taking your computer to a licensed computer repair technician.

Unplug the power supply from the hard drive, leave for 15 seconds.

Plug power supply back in.

Try another USB cable if that does not work.

Not showing blue light nor processing anything

hmmm..disconnect from computer completely. Then simply turn off power for around 5 min. Then just plug in and power up(no computer connection). I've seen this too. It MAY be related to a heat issue. Make sure there is NOTHING on top where holes are for cooling.

sounds like you are using the wrong power supply. Check the amp output on the power plug you plug into the wall make sure its the same as the amp input of your external harddrive

PC won't recognize flashing Western Digital External Hard Drive

First, I recommend changing the USB cable. Try it on another computer to see if it works. If that does not work the next part is more complicated. You may not want to do it.

Open the box and remove the hard drive. Open your turned off computer and attach the data and power cables and support the drive next to the computer with no stress on the cables. Turn the computer on and see if you now have a new drive.

Problem: there are two kinds of drives: IDE and SATA. IDE has a wide 40 wire data cable and big flat 4 connector power cable. SATA has a small (usually RED color) data cable and a small power connector. There is now way anyone could confuse the two types.

If your computer and external drive match you can check the external this way. If the are opposite, you are snookered. Beyond these suggestions, there is not much more I can do.
