Question about Cobra 29 LTD CB Radio

29NW LTD CLassic No transmit flaky recieve

First of all I'll get this out of the way. The antenna and cable and mount are fine. How do I know? I've checked it out with 3 other radio's and all work great. Especiall my little 510 since I used my SWR to tune the antenna to the radio.

Anyhow here is a complete description of the problem. I hooked up the radio, and it was recieving just fine. When testing out a radio I have the squelch turned down so I can hear the static. After a minute or so the static starts cutting in and out. When I can't hear any static, I can't hear anyone transmitting, not even at 1/4 mile away. I can almost hear something sometimes like someone is mud ducking REALLY badly.

The transmit doesn't work at all. The meter swings, but nobody can hear me. Also after a second or two, the Antenna light comes on when keying up. This is the same accross all 40 channels.

I have a very basic eletronics background. If I know exactly what component I am looking for I can test it or swap it out. While I know what is meant by finals, I wouldn't have a clue which components the finals actually are most of the time. Cobra 19 is an exception to this as it's fairly obvious. There is only a single outdrive transistor on the ones I have seen. My electronics background is 15 years ago and consists of basic and advanced highschool electronics, as well as 6 months in college for electronics engineering, where I got a 4.0 in lab. So my background is hit and miss.

I should have mentioned it in my post, that is one of the things I tried. Part of the standard troubleshooting procedure, to ensure in which area the trouble is at. Antenna(which includes the car), radio, or mic. Antenna and Mic both check out, radio............................. Heh.

When it's dry, I can't transmit, but when my antennas get wet, transmission doubles, WHY????

Hi John:
Try checking where the antenna is connected to the cable.
It may be corroded and you're not getting continuity unless it is wet.

I see two possible problems. First, with a magnetic antenna it is difficult to get the proper ground for the antenna. Make sure the magnetic base is clean as well as where you place it. Second, try running your power lead DIRECTLY to the battery and not using the cigarette lighter. Hope it helps.

The problem may be in the audio output chip mounted on the chassis, also! there is also a small capacitor located next to the audio chip that has known to be a problem, finally sub the speaker for another, often a source of trouble.

Radio transmits and recieves but is like squelch is turned way up and needle doesnt move at all

Check your antenna. Make sure it is getting a proper ground. If mag mount; make sure base of antenna and where you put it are both super clean. Check where whip goes into coil or base. Make sure all allen screws are tight and whip is not either all the way down to the base or up to the top. If antenna is mounted; make sure that it has a good ground. You might have to remove some paint around the base to get a good connection. DO NOT TRANSMIT WITH A HIGH SWR. YOU CAN BURN OUT THE EXPENSIVE POWER OUTPUT TRANSISTOR. Hope it helps.

Cobra 29 ltd classic cb not transmitting

Check the ground. Make sure its grounded well on bare metal. To see if the ground is bad, or not making good connection, disconnect the antenna and turn it on. if it does not power up, that means your ground is bad, and it was grounding only through the antenna.

Make sure not to key up with out the antenna connected.

Cobra 29 LTD Classic not transmitting or receiving

As I understand from a tech friend of mine, most truck beds are not grounded well enough. Perhaps you could borrow/purchase a magnet mount antenna and locate it on the roof, for testing. Then you would have it narrowed down to the location.

Cant transmit out

Not really enough info to help you, but you MUST check the SWR of your antenna system. I've seen many cases where the antenna studs were incorrectly installed, shorting the antennas to ground. Also, make sure the Dynamike control on the CB radio is turned fully clockwise.
