I did what you suggested + resetting the low and high speeds.Same trouble.Got a new fule pump, and blew out all the lines, but still wont run smooth unless choke is at least half way on.Hmmmmmmmm???? I'm stumped

  • docwayne Jul 17, 2009

The fule ,and air filter are good.would adjustment of governer be advised or replaced--??

  • docwayne Jul 17, 2009

Reciently the intake pipe was lose and exhaust I believe.I had it fixed, and they put new valves, guides, andpush rods, and it ran for about three hrs,and then other problems came up,so I took it back and thery put new rings /both sides, cam shaft/one side, and after that it started what I call lopping or surging. The trhotle bounces up and down along with the govener arm,and the only way I have found to stop the surging is to set the choke to about three quaters closed. My engine is a Kawasaki FH541KAI-I have also personaly put a new fule filter, air, and fule pump.Cleaned the carb, and put a new main jet in #112.What do you think???please advise. Thanks

This mower has two gas tanks, and the filling ports are aprox.31/2 in. across and aprox 6in. diamiter.

big openings.can't see rust in caps or around openings. What about readjusting the governer arm and shaft???how would I go about it??

The link you gave is to Brigg's and stratton/I have a Kawasaki FH541V-KAI engine.

I own a Gravely 0 radious lawn mower with a Kawasaki FH541V-KAI engine.Had some problems ,took it to dealer, had two valves, push rods,Ring sets on both sides, and a cam shaft on left bank only.I personally cleaned the carb, put new main jet, adjusted the high low speeds, new fule pump, blew out lines and checked gas caps and even left them lose to make sure. The pilot screw doesn't seem to do any thing turning it full either way. The problem is since I got it back the engine surges or lopes with the excelator rod and governer arm together, bounce up and down, weather at idol or full open high speed. The only thing I have ben able to rectafi this is to set the choke about 3/4 closed.Delema---What do you think?? Docwayne docwayne@windstream.net

  • docwayne Jul 17, 2009

I did all that and still same problem-Being as how the throtle rod and governer spring are together attached to the carb, and governer arm at opsit end of rod, could it be a governer problem??

U HAVE A TINY PIECE OF DIRT/DEBRIS IN ONE OF THE JETS OF THE CARB, THAT IS WHAT IS CAUSING THIS ISSUE, THE CARB IS VERY EASY TO CLEAN, YOU WILL NEED COMPRESSED AIR TO BLOW OUT ALL THE JESTS AND FUEL PASSAGES, IT ONLY TAKES A TINY SPEC TO CAUSE THIS CONCERN.

Remove and clean enitre carberator. Let it soak in solvent for a couple hours. Make sure floats are very clean. Also replacing needle and jet if necessary. Check your coil for good spark. Check air filter. You should be good.

If the fuel getting blocked and cannot flow freely from the fuel pump to the engine it bounces.this is seen in many machines.as you mentioned fuel pump is new and fuel is good.just get the passage where the fuel is filled as there is some rust /dust in the passage where fuel is filled.clean it intternally.remove all the fuel.drain all all.clean the fuel tank completely.then get the fuel refilled and then check out iut will work. thanks.please do rate the solution.thank you for using fixya.keep updated.

ReAdjust the Governor. You Should Not be Able to Move the Governor Arm . Make Sure you Hold the Governor Shaft in Place Until you have the Governor Control Arm Tightened on the Governor Shaft. If you want to see the Entire Engine Diagram, go to this Linkhttp://shop.briggsandstratton.com/BShopP... and Type in your Model and the First 4 Numbers of the Type Code.
Its Begining to Sound like the Governor Shaft Isnt on the Governor Inside the Engine. The Shaft has a Curved Arm on the Inside that Makes Contact with the Governor. If you Have the Governor Control Spring on Properly, then I would Reopen the Oil Pan and Ensure that when You Replace the Oil Pan the Governor Arm is Aligned so to Set on Top of the Governor. Hope this Helps.

Change the governor spring. It needs a stiffer spring or needs to be readjusted to a new hole. Get a new one from a local dealer and confirm the hole it should be in while there since they should have a similar model on display for you to look at. Let me know how this turns out.

Well if you replaced the governor spring (Make sure you use a new one, as the old one may have worn out). Then I would check the air filter and fuel filter and make sure they are clean as they are usually the cause of it if the governor is good.

there must be differences in the valves and carb sizing / jetting to make engines put out more hp similar to briggs with their engines

When asked for serial, I.E. AS01, BS01, etc., the lower the letter, the newer the engine. It doesn't really matter, except for maybe spark plug reach or other subtle changes

Engine dies when Blade is engaged

It sounds like the seat safety switch is the problem. Tilt up the seat and make sure the plug to the seat switch isn't loose or off completely, and that the switch is firmly mounted. If everything seems ok, remove the switch and test it with a multimeter. The circuit between the switch terminals should close when you press in the button. If not, replace it. Good luck!

Engine starts, runs rough (like cylinder missing), after a minute will run smooth a few seconds, then back to rough idle. new gas, new oil, gas filter seems clear. What else to check?

Establish which is the 'lazy' cylinder (touch the exhaust pipe header with a WET finger). There will be a marked difference in temperature. Change the plug on the 'lazy' side. If no better, check for a good spark - with engine running on the good cylinder, connect the other plug lead to a spare plug and grund the plug body. A weak/internittant spark will be readily apparant.

If there is a spark problem, replace the coil on the dud side. If not, check for equal compresion on both cylinders.

Hi, Check that you have the correct spark plug fitted or fit a new one as it sounds like your plug is getting hot then shorting out.
Sometimes the magnito can do this as well. but I would start with the plug.
