Trouble with my Panasonic DVD recorder DMR-E55EB

Hi

The machine is 2.5 years old & in the last month or so it has started to not recognise all discs.  Upon putting in the majority of discs (RAM or normal films) it seems to 'self check' & 'read' over & over again, then shuts down, then repeats the process over again. When this happens I can't eject the disc & even unplugging the machine won't work.  It all started when I tried to record & it kept turning off the record mode within a few minutes.  Every now & then it will play a disc perfectly but more often than not it doesn't.  When it is 'self checking' & 'reading' it seems to make a werring noise.

It has not been used greatly in the time I have owned it.  Any ideas?

I have a problem that my Panasonic DVD recoreder DMR-E55EB went through a period of powering off after a short time of working and now will not even power on at all, its about 2 years old, my brother has the same recorder and is starting to get the same problem. Does anyone out there know what the problem is and how to fix it?

This solution does not deal with why the machine does not even power back on, this is not a disk reading issue. Thanks for trying anyway, I have sourced a solution on another site and here it is, I will post again after I have tried it and let you know if it is successful or not.

Apparently this is a common problem not just with panasonic DVD recoreders, the regulator, part number STRG6353A is faulty and need replacing, I can only find one availabvle in Ireland and am goint to give it a go. The part will cost about £15 + p&p.

Problem seems to be related to the cooling fan. In my case it does not run at any time. Cooling with a constantly running fan clears the problem but I would like to know thw proper cure. Can anyone help?

DMR E55 won't record properly any more. It looks like it has recorded a 60 minute program but on checking it's only done 48 minutes, plus the title does not come up in display screen. on odd occasions it records fine but mostly it does 90% or records for 2 secoonds, goes off then self checks. the machine is 3 years old and has been playing up for the last 6 months. has been well used. it plays pre recorded dvd-rs and records dvd RAM fine. But now it is unreliable as a recording device. my video works better!

Hi Dengle

The heat is caused by IC001 which is a regulator that is mounted on a completely inadequate heatsink on the power board. This component gets very hot during normal operation.

The regulator will usually last a couple of years, depending on how often the machine is used and then start playing up. The symptoms are intermittent operation, continuous self checking and rebooting, not being able to read discs and so on.

Eventually the component can short-circuit, burn out and take other components with it. The on-board fan is thermostatically controlled. It does not operate all the time, only when the unit gets hot enough. By using an external fan, you are keeping the unit cool enough for its own fan never to cut in. The additional cooling is probably squeezing a bit more life out of the regulator and is stopping its own fan from operating.

I have repaired lots of these and have never found a faulty fan, or fan switching fault. There's always a first time of course.

It is more likely that the regulator IC001 is faulty and if you are technically skilled, I would suggest you seriously consider replacing it. Use some heatsink compound and an extra heatsink, and it will probably do the trick. The regulator is an STRG6353. You can get these easily online from a number of outlets. Don't attempt a repair if you are unsure of what you are doing. Regards..

Its definitely the SCR STRG35353A. I replaced it (not cheap) and put a 1"x2" heat sink on it. no problems any more. FIXED!

Unfortunately, it sounds as if at the very least, the laser assembly needs cleaned and aligned or even replaced. The symptoms you describe are exactly what you would experience for this error....accordianman

Trouble with my Panasonic DVD recorder DMR-E55EB

Hi,

Am afraid that this is indicative of a weakening optics or the laser. You can of course still give it a cleaning using CD ROM cleaner normally used for computers. Additionally you can try using a can of compress air to force out any dust inside the unit. Other than that all other actions would require opening the unit for a look and see, manual cleaning or worst case scenario, parts replacement.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

I have an 'old' DMR-E55EB recorder with my latest two RAM discs suddenly being 'write protected' without me knowing why. Is there any way to make them work in a read, write, and erase way again? If...

Very strange, but not uncommon.

The DMR-E55 (and its variations) is a 2004 model DVD recorder, so it is over 5 years old. If you did not set write/record protection on those discs, then it is likely to be a defect within the recorder, which may require workshop attention. You can always submit the unit to an authorised service centre for a quote and second opinion, to get an idea of the likely cost(s) involved, if a fault is found, then make a decision afterwards. Up to you.

Alternatively, it might be a good idea to cease using DVD-RAM discs and use DVD-RW/+RW discs instead if the unit accepts these as a recording format (or change brand of disc), and you intend to record more than once per disc. Or you could try the same discs in your PC if it has a DVD burner which is capable of reading/writing RAM discs as well as all other formats. If that works, the discs are OK.

If this does not work, then your only other option is to take the recorder to a workshop and have a qualified technician examine it thoroughly; but be warned - it may be expensive if you decide to do so. I hope it is nothing too serious.

DVD-RW discs are ideal for temporary video recording and data backup, but they are not recommended for successful finalising, as there is no guarantee that the disc will work in another device.

Have you tried using DVD-R discs? these CAN be recorded in video mode AND finalised for compatible playback in other players. I assume the DMR-ES30V is a DVD/VCR combo unit - if so, the DVD recorder will not recognise RW discs; only DVD-RAM and DVD-R.

DVD-R discs are recommended for video recording and finalising in this model. (later model Panasonic DVD recorders allow RW disc recording).

DVD recorder not recording any more

I have found that you get what you pay for in electronics. I bouoght a Cyber Home recorder, it lasted about 15 months before it went out.
I had another off brand ( don't remember name) that also didn't last. I have an older, I think it's a Panasonic, at least 5-6 years old. It won't reord on DVD+R, only on DVD/RW discs.
So, first I say you bought ****.
Buy name brand only it lasts longer.
Second, these things don't last to long.
I have a player only that is 5 + years old that still plays movies.
I haven't used the Panasonic for about a year. I do use it to PLAY movies still.

This is a problem with either the logic or the power supply. Without seeing the machine and taking measurements inside, I can't state for sure the exact problem. These are decent machines. I would suggest that you bring it to an authorized Panasonic service center for a repair estimate. Post the results here and we'll suggest the next steps.
