Question about Goodman CKL36AR36 Air Conditioner

I have an outside unit mfr Goodman, model # CKL-49-1. The blower motor isn't working. I'm able to hear it attempting to start. How do I check this motor to see if it's bad? Thanks

Yes, the one on top just under the shroud.

  • Kenneth Rohm Jul 16, 2009

Yes, it's the top fan motor on the outside unit Model CKL-49-1.

    Thanks

I know of the capacitor on the inside unit. I haven't had the cover off the outside unit in a couple of years and then only to spray the condensor. Is there a capacitor on the outside unit? There are three breakers in two boxes. Two on the inside for the heat and air and one on the outside powering the outside unit. Do all three need turned off? There are also two breakers inside the inside unit-back-ups I believe.

    Thanks

    Thanks for your answer.

I removed the top cover and the fan neither smells or looks burnt-the blades spin freely. Hhould I replace the capacitor first?

Both the capacitor and motor are GE. The wiring looks fine. I haave the unit power off so not to burn the compressor.

All three solutions received were excellent and are likely to lead to our unit working again.
    Thanks

You have bad capacitor on your unit it may not look bad but chances are it is just get the microfarad rateing of the side of the cap. should be like 55.5 55 7.5 something like that. Also check your fan motor. last. I have changed hundreds of caps this year. Russ

Make sure the fuses to the unit are not blown, all modern ac units have there own fuse box, if they are blown make sure the wiring connections are clan and tight, if you have aluminum wiring to the ac pay very close attention to wire connections, if this is all ok check the motor, does the compressor run? if so the fuses are not the problem and the motor or the motor start capacitor are.

Yes right the capacitor is inside its correct.you can also connect a extrenal capacitor if the inner capacitor is faulty
First, mount the new capacitor in the unit, install the 2 brown wires from the new motor to it, just leave the old dual cap. in as well. You may need to buy a spade connector to install the yellow wire to the defrost board, put the black wire in the same place on the contactor as the old fan motor,If you can't find room to mount the extra capacitor, hook the solid brown wire on the dual cap., and wire nut the brown wire with the white stripe, this will work as well. the voltages are as follows * Black wires------->Contactor T 1.
* Brown ---------> Capacitor terminal marked F. This is Dual Function capacitor Model # 27L568, 45 MFD / 5 MFD 370 VAC Protect P968 B9457 - 7200 /GREEN
* Purple ------------> DF2 terminal in Defrost Control Board.
The Defrost Control Board # 0334 1084-200 C GOODMAN P/N B 12260-08. if its correct the motor is faulty.if the motor seems burnt and smell like burning then also new motor required.mostly the motor is fautly as many users are facing this problem of blower motor stopped working. Please do rate the solution. Thank you for using fixya.keep updated. thanks.

IF you are referring to the fan motor ----

And - IF and only IF - you are pretty handy with things and have knowledge,,

    Perhaps you could try this...

Don't run it until the problem is fixed..
The humming is the compressor.. With out the fan - it will get damaged..

The first thing I would try is replace the capacitor.. BE SURE POWER IS OFF to the ac unit..

Cut the breakers OFF in the breaker box !!

IF YOU CAN NOT GET THE BREAKERS OFF AND/OR CUT THE POWER TO AC - DO NOT GO ANY FURTHER !!

IF THERE IS A N Y POWER GOING TO UNIT - YOU COULD BE SERIOUSLY HURT OR KILLED...

The problem could be the capacitor..

Inside the unit - Its metal & looks kinda like a can (round or oval) & has 3 wire conections at the top..

Do not remove copasiter until you have a new replacement to put in..

Be careful to not mix up the wire sequence..
Change one wire at a time and be very sure..

A copasitor is cheeper than a fan motor - and makes the most sense to replace..

If you are not compfortable trying this - get a ac company out to do it..

    Hope this helps !!

My goodman unit (1994) makes the loud noise, like a buzzing noise. The unit works, the blower blows air into the house, the air is cold, but the outside fan that blows across the condenser piping isn'

you need to replace your condensing fan motor. the noise you are hearing is the compressor working against a lot of pressure because the heat is building up in you condensing unit. Prolonged operation without an operating condensing fan motor will cause your compressor to burn up, and then you will have the cost of a compressor changeout to the cost of a condensing fan motor.

It doesn't look like the other 4 were used. Unless when it got "yanked" it also got cut. I am betting you don't need them though.

The outside unit has power going to it but isn't

maybe it has tripped off on high pressure, as you have have said the fan is not turning so will cause high pressure. now assuming the problem is the fan is not running than check the condition of the condensator /capacitor for the fan motor. if the motors winding is still good replace the capacitor and try it ON.

I have a Goodman a/c unit, comes on and runs but no colld air. fins spin and blower doesnt blow cold air. model # ckl 42 - 1.

The first thing I would do is a visual on the capacitor. This time of year with more use the capacitor will swell up and fail. themobilian_2410.jpgthemobilian_2411.jpg
If that is good I would see if the contactor was in tact
themobilian_2412.jpg
Sometimes the smaller wires get broken going outside to the contactor.
