I really needs checking against the spark plugs you have chosen? .045" is about right for most.

The car has entered fuel control which is a leaner mixture and requires higher spark voltage. with older spark plug wires they tend to leak this voltage to the motor block. suggest replacing plug wires and spark plugs.

need diagram of spark plug wires

Don't have a diagram but if you tell me what you are trying to do, perhaps I can help you.

Normally the firing order will be stamped on the top of the intake manifold also the number one plug will be the front one on the drivers side of the car. On the top of the distributor cap you should see a number one that is where the number one plug wire goes follow the firing order on the manifold and go clock wise on the distributor cap

put the dots together, pull out num 1 plug bring num 1 piston up too top dead center on compression stroke,

Check in your owners manual there should be a diagram of where your spark plug wires go.
