Question about Western Digital Passport WDXML800UE (WDXML800UETE) 80 GB Hard Drive

3 Answers

I have a WD passport. When I plug it into my USB port, my computer (windows vista) recognizes the hard-drive, but it is so slow in doing ANYTHING, even opening a folder, that I can't do a thing with the hard-drive. Eventually my computer freezes up. Why is this happening?

It sounds like the hard-drive inside the Passport is "dying".

Have you tried connecting it to a different computer, to see if it works better on the other system?

Check: http://www.wdc.com for a "drive fitness" utility program.
Also, Western Digital has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- give them the serial-number of your Passport, and they will give you a significant discount on buying another Passport.

Most external drives are formatted in FAT. Vista and XP are formatted in NTSF. Even though you have a USB2 connection, you're at the mercy of the slower file system on the external. If possible, reformat your external in NTSF. Not only will it increase performance, but it will prevent the common issues with "Safe Remove" that external devices tend to have.

Sometimes, portable drives need more power than a USB port provides. If this is a laptop, be sure it is plugged in to power and not running off battery. Also, if you have TWO usb plugs on the end of the wire, plug them BOTH in. This provides the extra power needed.

First, make sure you've downloaded all of the latest drivers and ran the installation CD that usually comes with the device. Then, check the computer manufacturer's information. Your USB ports may not be supplying enough power to run the Passport.

You run MS Windows Update to download and install the latest OS updates. Your WD external HDD should be detected after OS update.

For non updates system, try to connect WD to the USB Port where it worked before. If you have 4 USB ports for instance, try to connect it to these ports one try at a time. Windows XP might have assigned one USB port for your device before when it was working just fine.

Simple, your BIOS is setup to boot on external devices first. Try prioritizing your system to boot up to your system hard drive if you don't want to see that error anymore.

Are you using an external power supply for the disk? If not, you might be overloading the USB port. It should not happen, but USB ports are limited in the amount of power they can output. Especially laptops might face such problems.

Do other USB devices still work on those USB ports? If so then the port is at least not broken.
Sometimes you can uninstall and reinstall the USB hubs and controller devices in the Device Manager to fix USB problems.

I had the same issue. Its not a power issue because it shows up in device manager. Heres what I did.

Right-click on my computer and click Manage>Disk Management

Your drive should show up there. Right-click on it. If explore is not grayed out, assign a drive letter to it and you should then be bale to see it in my computer.

In my case explore was grayed out. I had to click on the option to format the drive. After re-formatting the passport explore was available. I then assigned a drive letter to it and I have access again.

I guess somehow using it on multiple computers srcewed up the file-system on it. I was using it between windows and linux.

This fixed my problem.

It could be that your computers do not put out enough power in the USB ports. (Apple laptops are notorious for this). You can call up Western Digital and tell them that it is not working and they will send you a free dual USB cable. This cable has one plug for usb power and one for data so the drive should work with it (although it will use up 2 of your USB ports!!).
