The pull cord on my self propelled Yard Man 21" Briggs engine won't retract. Can you tell me what to look for when I get it taken apart? Thank you.

How to remove the cord on my lown boy ?

Where the Starter Cord goes in to the top of the motor is what you need to remove. It is where the motor draws cooling air from and it is easy to remove. There are 3 or 4 small nuts (depends on HP, My 8.5 has 3. My 14hp has 4.) After you have it in hand, turn it over and you see the round pulley, take your time, there is a spring that pulls the cord back and sometimes it will just unwind with a lot of noise.
Don't worry as it is easy to do after installing the cord.
Now is the time to take a break, have a cold beverage!.
Then just put everything back together.
OOPS, I forgot to tell you that you can test the cord and retract spring without putting it back on the motor, and if you need to adjust the spring so it will pull the cord all the way in.

Good way to start learning about your mower.

I replaced the pull cord on an mtd mower. and now it won't rewind the cord?

You have to tension the spring before installing the cord. Remove the cord. Put the recoil assembly in a vise. Prepare the ends of the cord so they can be threaded into place. Spin the pulley in the proper direction until it is tight. Align the hole in the housing with the hole in the pulley. Thread the rope in and knot it and pull tight. Slowly let the spring tension retract the rope. Cut the rope to length, install handle, knot and test.

The pull start cord will only move about 3-4 inches and then it stops and then cord stops, Troy built- Briggs/Statton 21 inch self-propel lawnmower.

The mower's drive shaft may need to be lubricated. If you turn the mower over and try to move the blade by hand (with the mower off, of course) does it move, or is it hard to move? If it's hard to move or it won't move at all, lubricate the shaft by squirting some WD-40, 3-In-1, or other lubricating oil onto the drive shaft where it meets the chassis of the mower. Squirt enough oil to cover the circumference of the drive shaft, then try to spin the blade again. It should at least spin a little bit now. Squirt some more oil and spin the blade again, until the blade spins easily. Then turn the mower back over and try to pull the start cord -- it should pull normally now.

Pull rope cord on Yard-Man Mower, gets to a point and seizes. Can turn through it by hand with blade but still stops at that point each time with cord

My mower had the same problem. There was some dirt or debris built up on one side of the blade drive shaft, but once I shot some oil onto the shaft and turned the blade a few times by hand, it ran good again.

Hope that helps!
