Question about Carrier 38CKC036 Air Conditioner

1 Answer

When unit starts the condensor fan only comes, not compressor

The fan starts and the compressor doesn't, after time out, the unit shuts down and re-starts in about five minutes. this time only compressor starts and fan does not, you can turn fan by hand and it starts running. then the system works fine until set temp in home is reached and it fails again.
I have replaced dual run cap and also tried to beef it up by ganging two 440vac caps to meet start needs, but same condition arises.

You need a new fan motor and the correct capacitors for your sydtem I think they are 35 or 45 5 cap. Try a hard start kit on compressor. Are you sure you have the cap wired correctly?Russ

Refrigerator not cooling.

No the evaporator fan not running has nothing to do with the compressor. I would suspect that you are freezing up over the evaporator because the fan is not running and when it ices up the air can not flow through properly therefore causing the refrigerator side to get warmer. Replace the fan and you should be fine. Take the back panel inside the freezer off and see if you are all iced up. If you bare then I would replace the fan . You also said the defrost heater did not come on. That will also cause a freeze up. Possible replacement of the defrost heater may be needed. Good Luck!

Hello
Sounds like the condensor fan motor is going bad.If the fan stops turning or is not turning at full speed, the compressor can not give off heat to the condensor.Which will cause it to shut down on high heat.

So i would start with a new fan motor.Your local heating and cooling supply house should have these in stock.

Condensing has a humm but will not start?

compresor is probally hot also. Shut down unit and if you can put a fan on the compressor. While its cooling down try and remove and dirt, from the condensor coils. They are right there with your compressor. After an hour plug back in and see if it starts. let me know, hope this helps.

I t sounds as if the run capacitor is goinmg bad. You have a start and run capacitor in the unit the start side could be good however the run side is losing voltage and wont let the compressor run at its peak causing a thermal overload shutting down the unit for safety.

Would suggest the rplacement of the capacitor first then go from there

The Fan topside , Is the one working? The one that blows on the condensor? If not, your compressor can be trying to start against high head pressure. Ck the other fan, not the one that blows inside, the other one.It cools down the condensor and if the pressure is too high it will hinder the compressor. Good Luck
