Question about Linksys Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My cable company has my issue down to the linksys router. The hardwire connection back to the cable modem works fine. With the linksys in the mix, my PC doesn't believe we have an IP address. Is there any fix, or do I just need to purchase a new router?

Take a paper-clip, straighten it, and insert it in a small hole in the "back" of the router. This will reset the router to "FACTORY" settings. Then, reboot your computer. If you cannot get an IP-address, then it is time to buy a different router -- cheaper than trying to get a qualified technician to "trouble-shoot" your router.

I can not make a wireless connection from my laptop. The icon shows network available and my other hardwired computer is ok. I have disable my firewalls but still no connection.

Since you have not given what version of windows you are using, i am giving a generic step to test where the issue is. Please connect this computer directly to the router or the DSL/Cable modem you have and check if it is working fine with internet. If it is working then the issue is not with your firewall or setting. If it is not working even by directly connecting with a wire, then the issue could be with a firewall

Router drops my speed from 8 to 1 mgs when I connect to internet. Works fine when hardwired.

This router ( WRT160N ) has issue with the firmware.
It is recommended that you should upgrade the firmware of the router. Firmware is the software of the router.
connect the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable. Do not upgrade the upgrade using the wireless computer. Download the firmware of the correct model number and version number.
Once you upgrade the firmware of the router, you will need to reset and reconfigure the router according to the Internet service provide.

Unable to connect to the internet using a linksys wireless adapter. Connects to the router but can't find the internet.

Isolate the issue by directly connecting the PC to the router via ethernet cable (if possible).

If you were able to get online while hardwired connected to the router, then check the IP address of the wireless network connection, check the wireless security if the network key matches.

If you cannot get online while hardwired to the router, then directly connect the computer to the modem.

If you were able to get online while directly connected to the modem, then the problem is the internet settings on the router. Check the WAN configuration, such as DHCP or PPPoE.

If you cannot get online when directly connected to the modem, then you will need to contact your Internet Service Provider.

Hi, I'm an idiot! PLEASE HELP

you may be suffering from mixed Cat 5 and Cat 6 cabling.
The wiring is slightly different and they don't work well when mixed in routers and modems etc. One or the other will work , but when they're mixed it'll do what you have going on here...

I would recommend wiring everything with cat 6 ethernet cabling. Look on your cable and you will find the labeling on the outer casing.

LInksys wrt160n v2 wireless router not connecting to internet

Most cable companies will only allow 1 active device at a time conneceted to the cable modem. When ever you change what is connected to the cable modem you must always cycle the power/reset your cable modem.

When you are reseting the units, always rset the cable modem first, wait until it boots back up then reset the router. If that doesn't fix the poblem then it may be a configuration problem.

I forgot to ask if you are cable or DSL.

Hope this helps

Sound like you have a bad network card on the PC or the router ports have gone bad.
Have you tried different ports on the router?
The problem could also be in the ethernet cable.
Try another cable and see if that makes any difference.

How to change Linksys wireless router?

When you get cable internet, the cable company provides you with a modem (usually). From the cable modem you can hook up the Linksys router with an ethernet cable and it will work just fine. Hook the router up to the desktop or laptop with another ethernet cable if you need to make changes to the router security or whatever. The router address is generally 192.168.1.1. YOu can type that address right into the internet address and you router page shoud show up. If you have been using the Linksys router with the phone line all you need is to connect it to the cable modem to work. An ethernet cable is like a telephone line with a fatter connecter.

Connecting another router

i would'nt recommend it, theres no need for two unless you have mote than 4 hardwired pc's and 8 wireless, especially if they are both modem/routers, you cannot use two, only one modem/router and one router
