Went into Services and did manual or disable according to a list I got off of the internet from a tech forum. Must have disabled some that I needed for other programs to run properly. Can't turn them back on. Can't do a system restore, even in safe mode. Start button/taskbar are now gone, printers won't work, etc.

Cannot do it in safe mode either. cannot open properties to make changes. Quite a few are ENABLED but they are "stopped" for some reason

  • finditkaty Jul 16, 2009

Also, system restore won't work. safe mode won't fix any problems. Need to figure out how to get Services back to defaults as some of the programs must be dependent upon others that I made MANUAL or DISABLED.

You can do one of the following whichever is allowed :-

    1. Under the present condition you can't fix those services manually because there is a long list of services runing on your OS few are started automatically while others are started manually. You can press del key at the startup go to cmos setup change your first boot device to your CD rom second to your HDD save and exit.

    2. Keep on pressing F8 select boot with the last good known configuration if that works its ok.

    3. Else insert your operating system CD inside the tray and restart your pc when it prompts for boot through CD just hit any key. let it install the files first time when it gives you repair option simply hit enter key. Second time after partion selection type 'R' and enter. All your services will be repaired and your pc will come back to normal.

If this also does not works then I'd you will have to be prepared for a lengthy backup taking proceedure. Because I don't wan't you to loose your data. Just revert back to me after trying this repair option.

You are not left with any other choice than repair option. Ask any tech geek from neighbour. Kids always keep 2 or 3 extra copies of xp just take it for an hour and repair your system.

Provide some more info on what services did you disable? You can try to enable all the services back in Safe Mode. Start the computer in Safe Mode, click on Start select Run, type "services.msc" without the quotes and press Ok. Services window ill open up. Change the startup type of the services that you disabled or configured as Manual startup back to "Automatic" in case you do not remember the services that you disabled enabled back all the services and then check. Also what happens when you try to do the system restore?

The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

How to fix the Windows 7 Network Connection Problem

On this short demonstration, I would like to present, how to fix the network connection problem in windows 7. As we know, many Windows 7 users are facing Network connection problem like;

"unidentified network" or "no internet access"

I don't mean this will work for all the users, but most users will definitely get benefit from this. There might be other fixes too, but I am only presenting the most common and the simplest method.
Before we begin, please disable the Internet Protocol Version 6"ipv6" (what we commonly use is Internet protocol version 4 "Ipv4") from your "Local Area Network Properties" if you don't need it (this is not totally implemented for home users, if you are sure you need it, no problem just leave it as it was). To do this, click on the "Local Area Network Status" click "Properties" and from the list below the "General" tab, uncheck (remove the tick mark) from the "Internet Protocol (Tcp/Ipv6)" or something like that, and click "Ok" and close it.

Also enable "dhcp" services, if otherwise you'll need to provide a static ip address, type in the ip address which was given by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) on the IP address box. This depends on the service provider from whom you get your connection. When you are done, click "Apply" and then "ok".

Now, let's proceed simply like this.
Start -> Run (in the text box)-> and type in "msconfig" (without qoutes)
The System Configuration Utility window will pop up, now click on the "Services" tab and from the services lists, locate "Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B87 9762", and disable it. (Remove the tick mark on the left hand side of the above mentioned "Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B87 9762" )
Click "Apply" and then "Ok". You'll need to restart your system for the changes to take effect.

Optional; You can also go to the "services" directly by typing "services.msc" in the run box. The only difference is that, you'll need to right click on the "Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B87 9762", sand select "disable" or "Stop". Restart your computer or you can try disabling and enabling the Network Adaptor. Now check your internet connection by dialing using your username and password or try connecting to the ISP.

If unfortunate, this doesn't work for you, you can also try the following methods;

Open the Network Adaptor Properties, click on the "configure" and then again "Advanced" and on the left pane, click "flow control" you'll see the value (which is set) on the right hand side of the dialog box, change the value to "rx & tx" (when you click over the value box, a drop down list will be displayed, select rx&tx from the list and click ok). Sometimes even small trick fixes the problem.

If anyone has come across this similar problem and have solved using another method, it'd be very much appreciated if he/she can add them as comments. Good luck to you all.

Having slow performance? Make your PC/laptop run faster (only for WIndows XP)

There are some steps which you can try to boost your Windows XP PC/Laptop's speed & performance:

1) Removing Startup items

Click Start, point to Programs, click Startup, and then right-click each item in Startup and select Delete. Your Startup folder should be empty

2) Remove unnecessary programs from Add & remove programs list

Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. Double-click Add or Remove Programs icon.

Scroll through the list of installed programs, and remove the one you don’t need. Be sure about the programs those you don't need.

3) Setting PC/Laptop for best performance

Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
Switch to Advanced tab and click the Settings button under Performance subsection. Performance Options window will open.
Select Adjust For Best Performance option and click OK button.

This may degrade the looks but will increase the performance of PC/Laptop.

4) Right-click My Computer and select Manage. Computer Management window will open. Maximize Computer Management window.
Click plus sign next to Services and Applications, click Services, and switch to Standard tab on the right.

Disable the following services one by one:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service
Error Reporting Service
Fast User Switching Compatibility
Help and Support (switch to Manual)
Indexing Service
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
Performance Logs and Alerts
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Remote Registry
Upload Manager
Wireless Zero Configuration (don’t disable if using wireless network/Internet connection)

To disable the service, search the service name in the list of services & double-click on it. Change Startup Type for the service, selecting Disabled from Startup type dropdown box and clicking OK button.

Restart the computer.

5) Run CCleaner regularly.

Download CCleaner application from here. Install it.

Run it time to time to run your PC smoothly.

6) Defragment hard drive (may take up to 30 minutes or more than that)
Click Start, select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click Disk Defragmenter.

When Disk Defragmenter window opens, select a drive in the top portion of the window, and click Defragment button.

I am attempting to set-up my printer threw a netgear wired router and can't get it to connect for some reason (using manufactures software even). My printer is a: Canon imageRuner 3300. I have attempted...

Often two firewalls on the same LAN conflict. Both are trying to do the same job; the conflict may cause an otherwise good Internet connection to drop. If this happens, use the NETGEAR firewall, and disable the other. Two situations are described here, but the general approach applies to any firewall active on a NETGEAR LAN.
The Windows firewall may be turned on without you knowing, for example, if the XP Network Setup Wizard was used.
To Disable Windows' Firewall
See Microsoft knowledgebase article: How to: Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewall In Windows XP. (Note that you must be logged on as administrator, if you are not, no "Advanced" tab will appear as described.) For hints about using these Windows features, search firewall in Windows help, and select the article Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewalls.

To Enable the NETGEAR Firewall
Consult your router's User Guide or Reference Manual. Look for sections such as "Using Basic Firewall Services" or "Allowing and blocking keywords, sites, services". Manuals are available for downloading on this site.

To Disable the Norton Firewall
  1. Right-click the Norton Internet Security icon on the system tray and select Disable.

To Disable the McAfee Firewall
  1. Uninstall McAfee
  2. Reinstall McAfee, selecting Custom Installation.
  3. Unselect McAfee Firewall.
  4. Finish the rest of the McAfee installation as you did before.
To Disable Zone Alarm
  1. Right-click the Zone Alarm icon in the System Tray, and select Shutdown Zone Alarm.
Also search the Zone Alarm forum for such issues as this product continually logging people off AOL, or Windows XP wrongly reporting that Zone Alarm has been turned off.

When I turn on my Acer laptop, I get a message box saying "Check the status of your Acer eNet Services" and I don't know what to do. Thank you very much.

I followed the instructions given by one of your tech support guys - had a little trouble finding my way through the control panel services lists but in the end manged to fix my problem. I went into control panel, administrative tools, component services, services. I clicked the disabled files associated with my Acer eNet Services and made them automatic. Don't know why they became disabled to begin with but I had just downloaded an update Mozilla Firefox and Java - whether this had anything to do with it or not. Thanks for the help.
