LG WFT1391TP Top Load Washer - Black Clay Pieces in Drum

My top loader has black clay type pieces comming through the holes in the drum when washing. I opened the rear of the washer and noticed some black patches clinging to the inner of the machine between the drum and the outer plastick mould. It appears as if some has been dissolved as it is patchy.

I have the same problem, did a hot wash with bleach etc. Nothing works, I will now have to pay to have the build up cleaned by a professional. And What's up with the parts for LG, no one is able to help me?

I have the same problem. Washung with hot water and bleach did not help. My washung comes out full of gunk especially when there was a load imbalance problem. The problem started after I cleaned the lint filters.

Exactly the same problem as described below. Also ran a hot water wash with bleach. If anything, this made it worse.

same issue with WF-T655A Fuzzy Logic top loader

  • Anonymous Apr 11, 2008

We have the same problem of brown scum appearing on the washing. Have run a hot wash with 2 cups of Vinegar added. This did not solve the problem. Have stopped using Fabric Softener as thought this might be causing a build up in the washer but is still happening. Our model washer is WFT552TH. Is very annoying especially when washing white items that get brown scum on them!

SAME PROBLEM. Seems worse when the machine has not been used for a few days. Have been told by others (with the same problem) that it is caused by fabric softener that builds up in the tube thing where you pour in the softener. LG told a friend of mine (who has the same problem with an LG top loader) that it is a problem with the design. Which sucks, since there is not much you can do apart from stop using softener which sort of defeats the purpose of having an automatic washing machine.

When mine starts giving off black-brown gunk chuncks, I take out the washing, and then go through the following procedure which seems to help:
Select a warm wash (i.e. warm water only). Dissolve detergent in hot water (I use 2 scoops BioClassic), and pour into the softener thing. Also add detergent into the drum. Let it wash. Afterwards take paper towels and scoop out as much of the gunky chunks as possible. Repeat. Then, the third time, I do the same but with Bicarbonate of Soda instead of detergent (this helps for the funky smell that accompanies the gunky stuff). If necessary, let it wash again but just with water (rinses it out properly). By this time, there shouldn't be any more dirt floating about in the machine and you should be able to get your laundry done.

I've gone through this process a few times now, but still the gunk returns. So I've given up. Until I can afford a new machine (DEFINATELY NOT LG), I will have to stop using softener in the traditional way, but instead let the machine wash and rinse and spin, then add softener directly into the drum and let it rinse and spin again.

Good luck to all of you, until you can afford a new machine.
Don't sell the old one - burn it.

Same problem as listed here below. HAve used the Softner in accordance with manufacturer....NOT as LG suggests PROBLEM with detergent...

Seems that they have serious manufacturing flaw and do not know how to resolve it without incriminating themselves

Caustic soda. Be careful to wear gloves. Fill tub with water, cold will do, put in about 100gms of soda and turn on a extra large wash cycle only. Don't let the water drain, allow to stand over night, then complete wash cycle. You will find that hugh amounths of lint come loose. Repeat if necessary. I now do this about once every two months. Another thing to remember is to always leave lid open when machine is not in use, this prevents musty smells.

I have become obbsessive in sorting out the problems discussed and am now looking for a service manual for a WF-T7014PP as i want to remove the pulsators to ensure ther is no lint stuck in there. If anyone can assist please mail to

Lint build up. good hot water wash with bleach should do the trick

This did not work. I tried Bleach, and vinegar and washing machine cleaners and washing soda. and hot hot water. but still there

Yes, you need to wash the machine on a cycle of hot water with washing powder containing phospate. Then switch it off and leave with the water in overnight. The next day spin the water out and do one more wash just without anything in just to make sure its all out.

Hi mine does exactly the same! I have to call in my washing machine technician more often (he told me this would happen with a top loader as opposed to a front loader, boy was he right!!) and he cleans out the drum. Mostly it is the fabric softener which is too thick. I water mine down to 50/50 and I do another spin after my final wash. I also empty the filter of water at the side/bottom of the machine. This annoying problem is caused by the way the drum turns on a top loader as opposed to the front loader. My top loader cannot heat water automatically either like a front loader, and I think this also adds to the problem as hot/boiling water would dissolve all that soap/fabric softener. Hope this helps.

It's just a build up of residue. To clean out your drum, run a hot cycle (obviously with no clothes in the machine) with half a cup of vinegar then when the cycle is finished, wipe out all the residue, and trust me there will be alot. I do this every 3 months to give the drum a good clean out.

Grease marks left on clothes in the washer.

after parts replaced

you can still by a new drum and outer shell for that machine
main shell of washer
main shell plastic or metal

grease may be trapped between inner drum and
if taking apart steam/pressure clean between the drum and internal
use full container of borax
use very hot water
and run an empty full load wash

Whirlpool Ultimate Care II drum does not spin.

Depending on your washing machine model, the drum and motor are connected by 2 plastice yellow circular pieces, with a black rubber washer in the middle with holes where the pegs or rods go into. The 2 plastic circular pieces have 3 pegs or rods if you will, that connect to the black rubber washer via 3 holes. Sometimes, one or both of the 2 plastic circular piece pegs get broken off or the rubber washer cracks and breaks apart, so that the motor will not turn the drum. If thats the case, you can purchase the 2 circular pieces and black washer piece as a set.
