The mechanical seal. We sell them for about $4 or you can get them locally. The superpump uses a 201 seal.

My pool pump will run fine once I prime the system from the top of the pump basket. Then once the timer shuts the pump off, when it trips the switch to run again there is no water in the pump and it cannot...

If you are a long way above the surface of the pool and you have a leak on the filter it could be a check valve problem.
With it competly loosing the prime it sounds more like a suction leak. This will be in the plumbing and will need a re-plumb or it could be as simple as a lid "O" ring or cracked lid.
What happens is the air get's in the tank and air will compress when under pressure. Then when the pump shut's down the air can expand again. When it does it will rush back through the system and blow the prime right out of the pump. Quite often you will see water blow out of the skimmer or just blow the skimmer lid off. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Slow leak from what appears to be some kind of adjustment screw on top of pump , solution to stop leak

This is probably just the plug that is used to prime the pump if it looses it's prime, but I can't be positive since your description is a bit vague. I suppose that if you thought it adjusted something that you would be reluctant to just tighten it. Go ahead and tighten it. If it still leaks, then do the following:
Get some teflon tape (ask for it in the plumbing section at home improvement store or hardware store - $2 or less) Get a helper (a child will do). Turn off the power to the pump. Turn on the water at the kitchen sink until it stops running, then turn it off again. Now remove the leaking screw. Some water will come rushing out, but have your helper push his/her thumb over the hole (don't put a small finger IN the hole). Wrap the teflon tape around the screw in a clockwise direction as viewed from the bottom of the screw. Wrap about 5 layers, nice and snug. Don't leave a loose end that will dangle from the bottom of the screw. Put the screw back in the hole, nice and tight. Good luck, Al K

My Jet Pump Looses it's prime at night.

I assume the pump is not running at night. If the pump is higher than the pool, and the inlet and outlet to the pool are both under water, then you have a small leak. This could be allowing the water to leak out of the line. Or, if the leak is higher than the pool surface it is allowing air to leak into the line, which allows the prime to run down into the pool. If you found this useful, please vote. Thanks.

When my pump turn on it does not want to work you hear it running but that is it, it sound like it needs to be primed or something to kick in gear

you will need to fill the pump hair/lint pot full with water before you try to start it up. If it keeps losing prime, you'll need to investigate why it's happening. A possible air leak on the suction line, a cracked lid o-ring, an extremely dirty filter, or an air leak in the multiport valve on the filter. When the pump picks up prime, check for air bubbles in the pump pot, excessive air getting into the pump indicates a suction side leak. Any other leaks on the pressure side will lead you to where it may be letting air into the system and causing the pump to lose prime while the system is off.

When starting car, takes 8-10 sec to turn over.

Do you mean 8 to 10 seconds to START? Turn over means the engine is turning or cranking BUT starting is when the engine is actually running. I think you might have a fuel problem like your loosing your prime. Turn the key off wait 15 sec. then turn the key ON not cranking it repeat this (3x) if the car starts immediatedly your fuel pump is loosing its prime or the fuel pressure regulator is leaking.

My Hayward 2 hp pump basket water level drops to about half after the pump turns off. Is there an air leak? No water shoots out when pump is running. Will this damage my pump?

Yes, there is an air leak somewhere.

Only if you are using a timer and the pump fails to prime when the timer turns it on and it runs a long time in that condition. If someone turns it on, be sure it primes and you are fine.

Loosing prime

if you don't have any leaks it is probably the check valve in the fuel pump if you just cycle the key three times by turning key on and wait 7 seconds and turn off and wait 10 seconds each cycle it will start easier if that works and it starts fine the problem is the check valve in the fuel pump
