Mower blades won't engage

Did the smoking stop when you disengaged the blades? If so it is most likely your belt that is smoking. Make sure all the blades turn freely by hand to ensure you have not hit anything that may have bent a shaft on one of the blades. If one of the shafts is bent and wont turn FREELY, the belt driving the blades would slip and start smoking as it tried to turn them.

I hit a brick, lawnmower won't move help

check for bent crankshaft at blade connection point. do this by removing spark plug and turn the mower on its side with carburator side up, now spin blade by hand and see if it will spin without a wobble. if it does not want to move, something else inside the engine is damaged and probably not worth fixing. if the blade does not spin true, it is a bent crank and might be able to be straightened by a mechanically inclined person without further damage to the motor. also check to see if the piston is moving while spinning the blade if it will turn at all. Blade engagement lever won't disengage

If this is a manual engagment system all the lever does is to pull a jockey wheel into the back of the belt to tention it thus starting the blades to turn, so either the cable is jammed that pulls the jockey wheel in, or the jockey wheel arm is seized and needs freeing off to allow the jockey to to move to the relaxed position.

Hi, you are correct, the key will be sheered. Remove the top shroud and flywheel nut, then while pulling upwards on the flywheel have someone strike downwards on the crankshaft with a hammer and brass drift. Do not use a steel drift as it will damage the crankshaft. Hope this helps, regards Phil.

The pull start cord will only move about 3-4 inches and then it stops and then cord stops, Troy built- Briggs/Statton 21 inch self-propel lawnmower.

The mower's drive shaft may need to be lubricated. If you turn the mower over and try to move the blade by hand (with the mower off, of course) does it move, or is it hard to move? If it's hard to move or it won't move at all, lubricate the shaft by squirting some WD-40, 3-In-1, or other lubricating oil onto the drive shaft where it meets the chassis of the mower. Squirt enough oil to cover the circumference of the drive shaft, then try to spin the blade again. It should at least spin a little bit now. Squirt some more oil and spin the blade again, until the blade spins easily. Then turn the mower back over and try to pull the start cord -- it should pull normally now.

hi there nchernuka

have you checked that the engine to chassis bolts are still tight and the mounts are ok,

have you checked that you havn't bent the pto shaft ( this will be evident if you remove the blade carrier and blades, then the plug and pull the gine over - check wobble ), check that blade carrier is in good condition and the pto woodruff key is ok and the carrier centre pto bolt is tight

check that anything that is under the mower body is still tightly attached and is not getting swung into the path off the blades - ie catcher tounge - metal body brackets etc

i would also suggest you check the feather timming key in the flywheel too especially if it kicks back when you try to start it

cheers have a look

hope it helps pauly46

it sounds like the blade may have hit some thing hard .
You say the blade is turning is it turning level or is it sort of swaying as you may have ofset the drive pin.
Worst case.. new mower as it can cost a lot of money to repair drive
I know as i have done the same thing a few years ago
