I am assuming the operating system is Windows Vista ?
Windows has a mechanism that detects the hardware on your computer and will most likely get upset that it has been copied onto another P.C. Most Windows O/S on Laptops are OEM licensed which means that if the P.C is non working the licence stays with the now non working p.c.
suggest trying to recover crashed hard drive from hidden recovery partition http://gateway-us.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/34866/session/L3RpbWUvMTUxNjIyOTk0OS9zaWQvZlVldDZ6MDR5YTczZzNHSWI1aCU3RVZIeER6ZENWdmMxRzVjV0dOVkNfaWRJZTV1MU9KMXBOWkw2cEpfb2N5JTdFM0NHSmJSWW8zdThoSGs4RnNUQzQyWUVLcGhhUDA1bTZEVE1jRm1yREtLaFZrVGI0RnV5clQ2UU9ZZyUyMSUyMQ%3D%3D
then try getting a recovery cd for your particular serial number and model number from http://www.gateway.com/gw/en/US/content/contact-support
to use on your new hard drive

I get this problem and can't get past it help please Unmountable_boot_volume its a problem with the recovery system a blue screen for dell inspiron 2650

I sure hope you kept a recent backup. Something has gone terribly wrong in there. If you didn't keep a recent backup, do you still have the Windows setup disk(s), or the Recovery disk? It sounds like you will need to do one of those. STRONG ADVICE_ DO NOT start to run a Recovery or Resoration disk NOR a backup and then stop it part-way done! I did that recently, and it took me 3 months to find a solution. It deletes all your partitions. Then nothing will work without much research and work. Once you start a recovery from a disk or a backup, let it finish! It may take awhile, but it's worth it. Don't panic. Just do a backup restore or a restoration disk, and any lost data, will be lost. People call using the Restoration CD a "reformat". It gives you a fresh install of Windows. Try to always keep a recent full partitions backup, it's worth it's weight in gold. Feel for you!

How do I do a full recovery with the disc

Turn your computer on.

Insert the Disk and choose to enter BIOS, should be F2 but watch the screen to see the right function key.

Change the boot device order to: CD-ROM, HDD in that order.

Save changes and restart the computer.

The Recovery Disk would boot up and a wizard will guide you through the recovery process.

Follow the instructions to recover your computer.

Hello
how did you format you computer? if you didnt delete the recovery partition you can start recovery to press F11 when bios starts.

HP should also be able to send you recovery disks for vista.
Im sorry to say but warranty doesn't cover formatting the disk, that is not a hardware failure

Backup for Sony vaio

Hi,

If you got the recovery disk along with the Vaio laptop, good enough.Insert the disk and reboot, follow instruction displayed on the screen to restore.

If you dont have a disk, can try this :--
Reboot and press F11 to try and enter the system recovery mode, if you can then you're good, simply follow the prompts to perform a system recovery.

Let me know the status please.

Thanks

Need to run the recovery XP disk

Since you have the XP licence key, try to get hold of an XP install CD and do a repair installation, using your own key when asked for it.

I've inadvertantly deleted the recovery partition in (D DRIVE) on a compaq presario and do not have a recovery disc/s as backup. How do I carry out a full system recovery now to get the computer back to...

You can buy a copy of the CD by contacting HP from website, or calling the phone number in laptop documentation, that is the easy way.

The other way is using a generic windows CD corresponding to the licence printed on the sticker at the bottom of your computer. You will need to download and install drivers afterward.

Does any one have gateway GT5220 Installation disk ?

Create an ASR Floppy Disk loadTOCNode(2, 'summary'); The following steps can create an ASR floppy disk from an ASR backup operation: 1. Format a 1.44 megabyte (MB) floppy disk and insert the disk into the floppy disk drive of the computer. 2. In System Tools, start the Backup program. When the Backup and Restore Wizard is displayed, click Next. 3. Click Restore Files and Settings, and then click Next. 4. In the What to Restore dialog box, select the media that contains the ASR backup. Ensure that the media is inserted. 5. Expand the Automated System Recovery Backup Set that corresponds to the ASR floppy disk that you want to create. 6. Expand the second instance of the drive letter that contains the system files. Expand the Windows_folder/Repair folder. 7. Click the following files from this repair folder: Asr.sif and Asrpnp.sif, and then click Next. 8. At the Completing Backup or Restore Wizard screen, click Advanced. 9. At the Where to Restore screen, set the Restore Files to: dialog box to Single Folder, and then set the Folder Name dialog box to the root of your floppy drive, for example, "A:\". 10. Click Next. The other options in this wizard are optional and do not affect the transfer of files to the floppy disk. When the wizard is finished, the files are copied to the location that you had previously specified. The ASR floppy disk is ready for use in the event of an ASR restore operation.

NOTE: The Asr.sif and Asrpnp.sif files must reside on the root of the floppy disk drive to be used during a ASR restore operation. Starting the Windows Recovery Console loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation'); To start the Windows Recovery Console, use one of the following methods: • Use the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM to start your computer. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press 'R" to repair. After you start the Windows Recovery Console, you receive the following message: Microsoft Windows(R) Recovery Console

The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.
Type EXIT to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

1: C:\WINDOWS

Which Windows Installation would you like to log on to
(To cancel, press ENTER)? After you enter the number for the appropriate Windows installation, Windows will then prompt you to enter the Administrator account password.

Note If you use an incorrect password three times, the Windows Recovery Console closes. Also, if the Security Accounts Manager (SAM) database is missing or damaged, you cannot use the Windows Recovery Console because you cannot have correct authentication. After you enter your password and the Windows Recovery Console starts, type exit to restart the computer.

When you use Windows XP Professional, you can set group policies to enable automatic administrative logon.

Use the Winnt32.exe utility with the /cmdcons option to add the Windows Recovery Console to the Windows Startup folder. This procedure requires approximately 7 megabytes (MB) of hard disk space on the system partition to hold the Cmdcons folder and files.

I need to get a recovery disk for my acer laptop

If it is a newer one you may have onboard if not and you have a licence sticker still ring acer and give them the licence number they will send you a recovery disc/s not sure if they charge for it or not, or if you have a licence sticker you can just go buy xp or whatever you have and use that you should get a new licence for the program to. Or you could get a freind to burn a copy of their recovery disc/s if same as your laptop only thing is you could not use it online.(as is concidered a pirated copy for obvious reasons) Best bet would be to buy new copy of program and do a system restore

Laptop help again :)

Don't panic, the situation is not too bad, as the laptop's hardware is still all ok.
The Ghost software probably did not work because you did not make a complete bootable ghost CD from Windows when computer was working, or you did not do the ghosting procedure properly, or finally the ghost cd is corrupted.
if F11 does not work, it means that the recovery partition on hard disk had probably been corrupted by the virus.
Check if your laptop is covered by some insurance or extended guaranty to cover expenses for system reinstall.
Best way to proceed is asking a copy of restore cd fro your model from HP.
Contact them and ask how to obtain a copy of CD in your region, In UK they charge you £25 or so to send you the disk.
If for some reason you cannot get the restore cd, you will have to re-install system from a generic windows cd, possibly the same Windows version to validate the licence on Windows sticker at the bottom of your laptop (eg. Vista Home, XP home edition, XP professional etc.).
If you have to use a generic Windows disk you will need to download all drivers from HP. and install them after installing Windows.
Also a good choice can be locating a computer repair shop in your area and having the system re-install done using the licence number printed on the sticker at the bottom of your laptop. This job usually is not too expensive, in London, where I work, we charge £45 to do system restore.
Good luck.
