STEP 1
Check the Power and Data Cable

  • Check that the power cable is securely connected to the external drive and wall socket (applies only to desktop external hard drives).
  • Do not connect the drive through a USB hub, connect it directly to the PC or laptop. Make sure the power adapter is connected directly to a wall outlet, not to an extension cord.
  • Ensure the cable is securely connected to both the drive and computer.
  • If your external hard drive came with with a Y-cable, use both USB connectors to ensure the drive is getting the appropriate power.
  • If you are connecting to a PC, use the USB ports found on the back of the computer. Avoid using USB ports found on keyboards, monitors or the front of the PC.
  • If the problem still continues, try using a different USB port.

STEP 2
Check the Drive Partition in Disk Management

Even though the drive may not be visible on the "Desktop" or in "My Computer," check to see if the drive is recognized in "Disk Management."
  1. Right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage" from the menu.
  2. From the "Computer Management" window select "Disk Management" from the menu on the left.
  3. In "Disk Management" check to see if the drive is visible. If the drive is found, look at the partition for the drive. New drives will be labeled as FAT32 and have a drive letter assigned.
  4. If the drive does not display as "Healthy," or shows the file format as "RAW," then the partition has become corrupt. It could also be corrupt if the bar above the drive is black and shows as "Unallocated."
  5. To make the drive usable again after a partition has become corrupt or lost start by right clicking on the drive in "Disk Management" and select "Delete partition" from the menu. Then right click on the drive again and select "create partition" from the menu. Follow the steps in the partition wizard to create a Primary partition.

NOTE: Deleting the partition will cause all data on the drive to be lost. If the partition has become corrupt this may be unavoidable. HGST is not responsible for lost data. It is highly recommended that data be backed up in multiple locations on multiple drives to minimize data loss.
  6. After the new primary partition has been created "Disk Management" will display the drive with an NTFS partition. The NTFS partition is unusable on a Mac. If the drive is used on Macintosh and Windows computers, follow the link below to obtain a FAT32 formatting tool which will allow both Windows and Macintosh users to use the drive.

    http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm

STEP 3
Check the drive status in Device Manager :

  1. Right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage."
  2. From the "Computer Management" window select "Device Manager" from the list on the left.
  3. From the device list, expand the "Disk Drives" category by clicking on the [+] symbol found to the left. If the drive is detected by the system, there will be an entry for your external drive.
  4. If it is not listed under "Disk Drives," expand the "Other Devices" category and see if there is an entry for an "Unknown Device."
  5. Right click the "Unknown Device" and select "Properties."
  6. Under the "General" tab, it will typically display "This device is not working properly" followed by either Code 10 or Code 28.
  7. Code 10 would suggest a potential power supply issue (typically 3.5-inch desktop external drives). If a second external drive with an equivalent power supply is available, try connecting the power supply to the drive.

NOTE: Before connecting a power adapter that did not ship with the external hard drive, verify that the power configuration matches exactly with the power adapter that was supplied. Failure to use the correct power supply can result in damage to the unit, injury or fire.
  8. If a different power supply is not available, verify the problem by connecting to a different USB port or by connecting to a second PC.
  9. If the same error code is still displayed, create an RMA and return the drive under Warranty.
  10. Code 28 would suggest a driver error.
  11. Expand the "Disk Drive" category in "Device Manager" right click on the drive and select "Uninstall."
  12. Disconnect the external drive, reboot the computer and reconnect the drive when the computer has finished restarting.
  13. If same error is displayed, try connecting it to a second PC to verify the issue.
  14. If the drive fails on the second PC with the same error, create an RMA and return the drive under Warranty.

Problem with Accessing Western Digital WD My Passport Essential SE 1 Tb external driver, please guide to resolve problem with windows XP

Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management Then go into Disk Management. Hopefully you will see a drive with a capacity of about 480 GB (plus or minus), that's your disk.
Right click on it and select change drive letter and change the drive letter to something that isn't in use.
If that doesn't work or it doesn't show up, go into the Device Manager from the Computer Management screen and see if there is anything under disk drives with a yellow or red symbol next to it. If so, right click it, select uninstall, then unplug the disk drive and plug it back in.

My Western Digital Passport 80GB Hard Drive is no longer detected when I plug it in. The power light is on, the drive is running but it is not detected on either of my computers running Windows...

Any external disk-drive as small as 80GB is probably "out-of-warranty" -- it's likely that the disk-drive inside the enclosure has "died".

You have two options, not mutually exclusive:
* exercise the Western Digital "Customer Loyalty" program -- find the serial-number of your Passport, and access WD's web-site to buy a new Passport, citing the old serial-number to qualify for a significant discount on your purchase;
* open the enclosure, disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and connect it to the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, to "frankenstein" it, creating a "new" external storage-device.

My external harddisk - WD 320G(my passport essential) can not recoginze on Window 7. Please help to slove.

First check physical connections of hard disk to your cpu. Check in 'device manager' disk drives tab. If its found check in "disk management" in that drive which file system its showing. If it shows raw partition mean your file system is corrupted. It requires remove that partition and create a new partition.

for open device manager : start > run > devmgmt.msc
for disk management : start > run > diskmgmt.msc

My computer is not recognizing my Western Digital passport elite what do I do?

Have to check it in the Device Manager that the new device have been detected or not. It may happen that when the external HDD connects to the computer for the first time computer cannot detect it as it is not properly formatted in proper file-system. Open Computer Management and click on Disk Management and format the device correctly to operate.

I can feel d disk rotating yet PC doesnt recognise the drive

Hi There mosam,

In most cases, external Passport Drives come with their own drivers and install themselves automatically when connected to your puter's USB port. If it doesn't find a driver, then the Passport can't work. Go to the Western Digital Support website and type in the model # of your external drive. Having located the driver for that model, download it by saving it to your desktop. Then run the exe. driver install software. Once having done so, your Passport should show right up and off you go! Very Important...if the driver install program wants you to restart your puter after installing itself, be sure to do so. Good Luck!

I have a Maxtor 3200 and it isn't showing up on either my desktop or laptop in My Computer and the desktop only shows it in remove device safely and my laptop isn't showing it anywhere

Hello,

While it's attached to the desktop try: Right-Click on Computer or My Computer and select Manage. In the window that comes up you will see Disk Management, select it and wait a few seconds then look through the right hand side. The first drive listed will likely be your boot drive. If it shows up there but is unallocated report that back. If not take it to the PC store nearest you and ask the technicians to move the HDD in the passport to a new shell for testing, if that works buy the new shell.

If neither of these works the drive may be damaged, if you need the files that are on it and it seems to be damaged, report back here with your Country, State and City and I will locate the nearest Data Recovery pro and refer you in.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Local disk error WD My Passport 250GB

Do you connect & disconnect the drive according to WD's recommendations here? Try another cable. (If yours was wearing out, that might explain why it only connected some times.) Try another usb port. Check the power supply (another receptacle) Unplug other usb devices from the system.
See this article. Good luck!

I had a similar problem with my WD passport 320GB. When I connected it to my laptop it never showed up on My Computer even though the blue light on the hard drive came on.
Here is what I did:  Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage" and then "Disk Management",. you should see your WD hard drive listed. then click on "change driver letters and paths"  and change it from the listed to another drive. I changed mine from G to F drive and it worked for me.
