Hi There, If you have just set up this machine then Auto Update can play havoc with your performance for the first few hours. Give it a bit of time to settle down. Generally speaking there are 3 things to look at when a computer is running slow. Available RAM, Disk Input Output, and CPU usage. Normally one will be the bottle neck when your computer is slow. (Don't forget even when it is fast something is still the bottle neck) Open up task manager by right clicking on a blank bit of the task bar at the bottom of your screen. The Task manager varies slightly depending on what OS you are running? The description basically refers to XP and Win2k, Vista is slightly different but you should be able to dig around and find the matching information. If the CPU is constantly above say 80% have a look a the list of processes and sort them in order of usage by clicking on the CPU column. Then Google the process executable name to see what it is if you can't recognize it. It is a real bummer if it is just called svchost. You will need some more complex tools to diagnose that. On the other hand if your Available Ram is low, again change to the list of processes and see what is using the majority of it. If your disk light on the front of your pc is going crazy then you will need to add a column or two to your task manager to figure out which process is using all your disk i/o. With the processes tab selected choose the view drop down menu and then select columns. Have a look at the I/O reads and the I/O writes columns. If you can't figure out your problem from here post the results of your observations. That will give us a lot more to go on :)

Start Accessories System Tools Defrag, also, try right click my computer properties advanced performance ajust for best performance, then go to advanced tab and increase memory click set apply ok then do disk cleanup, and try a full system scan for viruses with you anti-virus software, then go to search and type adware find, delete, go to task manager, click processes look for adware in the name and end process untill you find and delete it

Having the same proble with Dell optiplex GX260 very very very slow it takes a day to load Xp SP2 and I added up to 1GB still the PC is very slow. The machine fresh loaded no application loaded only XP...

I would take a look at the motherboard, mainly the capacitors and see if any of them are bulging or have stuff coming out of them, if they do the motherboard is pretty much bad. If the motherboard looks good, try disconnecting the cd/dvd rom drive, and remove any add in cards that are in the pc. If there is still an issue, could be a bad cable for the hard drive, or the motherboard or processor could be going bad.

These things are notorious for having the CPU heatsink grease dry up (and the processor speed steps down) but I'd also scan the hard disk for bad sectors.
If the fan has started sounding like a jet engine, it's more likely that it needs new heatsink grease on the CPU.

Dell GX260 has distorted video on Dell 19" widescreen. Circles turn into ovals.

Most likely the Display Resolution is not set to a 16:9 display aspect ratio (1366 x 768 for example) if you use a 4:3 ratio on a widescreen, then everything is distorted. Make sure the display is set to the optimal resolution You can look up you monitor's Optimal Resolution here:

hyperthreading must be supported by the processor. If you don't have that capability, it won't work.

Very slow boot

Bruce, the Dell OptiPlex GX260 normally will be equipped with a PC133 DDR1 128MB RAM module. It is recommended that you upgrade to higher memory bus DDR1 memory module, for example, 512MB/1GB DDR 1 running on 266 MHz to 533 MHz.

Hope this helps. Make sure u come back here if u still have further request.

If this is happening on all workstations you should look at your network settings and verify that your DNS settings are correct.  Also look in the error logs on the server to see if it is fillingup with system or application errors.
