Re: laptop turns on no picture on screen.
When you power up the computer press F8 key then if you cna see safe mode and other menu then your computer is ok only screen resolution issue for that enter in enable vga mode. then go to control panel and then dispaly then settings then changfe screen resolution to 1024*768 then if you can't see safe mode and other menu then you have reset your bios For that you need to reset factory defaults settings for bios. For reset bios u have to open back side of your laptop then u find motherbord circuit there. pull cmos cell on motherbord for 15 minute then it reset to defaults. Also u can reset with jumper settigns read carefully on mother bord there is 1 jumper near cmos cell u read there " bios reset or clear" It is on 1-2 position right now set it in 2-3 position then power up then all bios settings are reset. then again set it in 1-2 its original position.

Does your laptop have its lights on the keyboard even if your screen is black? If it is , try to remove the cables and battery of the laptop. Press and hold the power button for 8 seconds. Then reinsert the cables and battery on the laptop. Turn on the laptop, and if there is no light on screen & keyboard, it means that the power supply or the motherboard has trouble. That is the time to contact Dell support for possible repair or replacement. Otherwise if the keyboard has lights but the screen is still black, that would be a video card problem since the LCD screen is not a separate entity. Just make sure if it has the power button on the screen, it is turned on. That instance would need a video card replacement...
I had a similar problem with a one year old Dell laptop, and it turned out that the screen was OK on battery power, but when you plugged it in to the AC charger the screen went very dark. It turned out to be the LCD backlight inverter, which I purchased from a fellow in Florida for about $16 and installed by following the instructions at http://www.insidemylaptop.com/remove-replace-lcd-screen-video-cable-inverter-on-dell-laptops/ . Hope this helps you out a bit...
The fault is a back-light problem and the fault could be a faulty inverter board or a faulty CCFL lamp. For service, parts and DIY info check out LCD Parts WEB site, please click on this link :- www.lcdparts.net
ur unit is overheating turn off and unplug and let cool down, clean vents around fan intake (under unit) and around top each side of keyboard when cool enough plug back in and listen for fan operation while booting up if no fan it may be stuck or burnt up and may need replacement but ur biggest problem will be the hard drive if it was overheated for to long could or is damaged good luck hope ur lucky and that it just got hot
sounds like my brothers laptop dell D610 the lcd screen will turn on for a little bit and then turn off. we noticed if you hold a flashlight to the screen when it was on and you could see video. the back light or the inverter went out ordered a used screen from discount electronics and replaced the lcd with backlight and inverter
You can see the Vertical Outpu IC(must be damage and resistor from the flyback tranformer), but check the main power supply STR. Some times this STR not seems damage when you test out of main board, but with voltage it funtion not well.(Sorry my English).
when switching on te laptop, does it make noises, does the fan run, the CD/DVD-drive LED shows green light and the harddisk rattle little bit? - good for you if it does, as the system still boots up !
to check if the LCD screen is broke and not the graphics card malfunctioning:
hook it up to an external monitor (one usually used with desktop PCs) when laptop is switched off, using the 3-pin input in the back or to the right side of your laptop, and make sure the external monitor's power cord is properly fused...
Now switch on the external monitor first and then your machine again, and wait for the laptop boot messages on the monitor! see anything? if yes the laptop screen is broke and needs to be replaced. If still the external monitor stays black the onboard graphics card is up in smoke and you're in big trouble then.
