IPhone suddenly is running out of storage space
Solution 1: Using Cloud Service to Increase iPhone/iPad Memory Capacity
If the storage runs up on your iPhone itself, why not to choose the Cloud service? You can use DropBox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud, Amazon Cloud Drive and etc to manage your files on iOS devices. Here we take Amazon Cloud Drive application for example.
Download & install this app on your computer.
Log into your Amazon account.
Upload your photos, videos, music or documents from iPhone.
Delete the original files on your device.
Solution 2: Using Flash Drive to Expand Memory on iPhone/iPad
When you buy an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, the device comes with a storage capacity ranging from 16 to 256 GB for iPhone and iPad, 8 to 128 GB for iPod Touch. So your iPhone capacity is limited by the phone you buy and you're not allowed to add a memory card. It doesn't mean you can not use external storage option and here is how it works.
For example, SanDisk's iXpand is one of the most popular choices among iPhone users. You can simply plug in the lightning connector to your device and then get photos, videos or other files off your iPhone to this drive. If you do not want anything sticking out of your iPhone, you can also choose a wireless hard drive, like Western Digital MyPassport Wireless.
Solution 3: Using iPhone Eraser Tool to Free up iPhone Storage
In fact, the files you delete with the built-in deletion are still stored in your iPhone. Although they are invisible to us, they actually take up your iPhone space. Similarly, the pixels of a photo or video make for a better viewing experience may also cause your iPhone to go over storage capacity.
So the best way is to erase the deleted files permanently and compress the photos from your iOS devices. Then you will release and get more memory storage after that. Here Yolisoft iPhone Eraser is an all-in-one tool, which not only can erase your iPhone selectively, but also compress your iPhone data, to free up and add memory to your iPhone.

If you're using a 16GB iPhone, you have to clean up storage on your iPhone regularly to keep the device running normally. If you don't want to delete photos or videos shot with the iPhone camera, then you'll need to connect iPhone to computer with the USB cable, and copy these photos and videos from iPhone Camera Roll to your computer. This method is an easy but efficient way to keep your iPhone photos and videos safe when you want to free up your iPhone storage space.

Do an iTunes backup with your iPhone or directly transfer some iPhone data to your computer for backup, and then delete your iCloud backup or stop sync some photos with iCloud. Tutorial: How to Backup Files from iPhone to Computer
You can update iCloud storage to 50GB for 2.99 monthly or pay it yearly. I have 200GB iCloud storage & pay it yearly for half the price it.used to be. 5GB free isn't enough to store the data from your phone. Even from a 16GB phone.. Mine is a 64GB phone, another family member has a 64GB & the 3rd family member has a 32GB phone. I store the family's photos in my iCloud. I also backup my iPad Air and MacBook Air Laptop to iCloud. Hint: I don't totally trust iCloud with all the updates. I also use Amazon photos (part of Amazon cloud) & store unlimited photos. To be safe, I back up my MacBook with a 64GB Flash Drive that cost $16.

The solution to this problem is a relatively simple one: simply updateWhatsApp from the App Store. The iOS team over at WhatsApp have already issued an update that is now live on the App Store that fixes the issue. Install the update, wait for a few minutes, and the free storage space on your iPhone will go back to what it was previously.
Hope it works well.
