Yes you must have messed up the setting try change the cartridge i mean swap it, black for colour and colour for black, if it does not work, then make sure you bought the right one check the numbers of the one you changed, if its thesame, then return the catridge there must be a factory error or the catridge is a fake one. thanks

How do I check ink levels on my HP deskjet D4160 Printer

When your printer was installed, it came with a CD with a complete software package for your printer to report (ink levels/diagnostics/etc) to the computer. If it was installed in Windows 7 (and below) it would be found at "Start" (button) > "HP" > Deskjet D4160 > Deskjet D4160. In Windows 8 look for HP. Once you've opened the application it will query the printer for its status. One of the icons will show the "Estimated Ink Levels".

If you can't find the software installed or the CD you can find it at HP's (US-English) support page for your D4160 is at the link below. Persons from other countries you can find their language at HP.com/support. There you can find everything you need.

Ink Jet Notes:
·Printers can be set to "economy" (default or individual job) to save ink if high quality is not an issue.
·Follow the user's manual or print using all cartridges at least monthly to insure the cartridge jets do not get fouled with dried up ink. Once fouled its toast. I've never been able to clean one.
·New printers come with minimal ink in the cartridges.
·"XL" (high volume) versions of your printers ink cartridge is cost effective if you print frequently.

Doe's it have a color and a black ink cartridge? Got unplug the cartridges and plug them back in. Go to the folder where the printer is installed in program files. Find printer toolbox program and run it. It should tell you ink levels.

Hi HP deskjet d4160...runs the paper but prints either 1 line or nothing

It may need a new ink cartridge or the flat cable from the printer head is broken.

Changed cartridges, won't print, yellow arrow flashes

Generic cartridges can cause problems like this. Try using HP cartridges instead. If using HP cartridges, then try cleaning/aligning the print nozzle with the software that came with the printer.

Unable to print with new ink carts

Usually, that message means that your cartridge is dead. Try removing it, clean the electric contacts on it and the ones on the cartridge carrier. Put it back in. If that doesn't help, you will need to buy a new color cartridge.
If you do not have a replacement cartridge, you can still print in, what HP calls "ink backup mode". Simply remove the problem cartridge, and print with the remaining one, in this case, the black one.
  • If you remove the tri-color cartridge, printouts will be in grayscale.
