Thanks for your help but I'm not sure about removing the 'back side cover'. There are two small panels and I have looked under these and there does not appear to be any battery cell there.

Do I need to remove the whole base, via the ten other screws?

You need to change your cmos cell on motherbord circuit for that open back side cover and then you can see cmos cell on motherbord circuit.Change it pur chase new cmos cell.
Your old cmos cell has not enough waltage so your bios settings are not saved when you turn off the power.

Actually, the CMOS battery is located under the keyboard on this model. Simply unscrew the two screws on the bottom of the laptop (they have alittle picture of a keyboard next to them). Lift up the keyboard and down towards the touchpad will be a battery wrapped in black with two wires coming from it. Replace this (ebay search r40 cmos battery about £5 delivered)

It will be the cmos battery thats gone, thats the internal battery that holds things like the date and time, on the larger macines its normally a coin battery, something like a cr2025 or simular, on some of the later machines they may have different ones, its probably esy to get to do a search for the cmos battery change - you may find the right one here - coin batteries

My hp 6400 lp flashes 163 time &date not set then shut down

Try setting the time in BIOS. It may require a new CMOS battery if the system is exceptionally old, and loses the time again.

My IBM R40 laptop is shutdown auto why after

If thelaptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out.Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles andwill lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR Thebattery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the batterydrops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to anunacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced.

Our new battery won't charge up fully, and is gradually going down 1% every few days. Now at 95%. Just like why we replaced the last batter.

a battery will not hold full charge when its not being used it will slowly lose charge over time keep your battery in a dark cool place if it is connected to your thinkpad it will gradually lose charge
hope this helps

Right-click the time in the lower right, select: adjust date and time, select: internet time, select either source, select: apply (if high lighted)--otherwise close. You need to be connected to the internet for the internet time to work.

I have a r40 ibm laptop problem is date & time error i replaced cmos battery update bios but still problem now

Assuming that you used the correct battery go ahead and unplug and replug the cmos batter back into its connector.

Go into the BIOS and set the date and time properly. Then unplug the battery and save the changes and exit.

See if the message comes back, if it doesn't then your good to go. If the message still comes back then the motheroard isn't keeping memeory at all.

Go ahead and shut off the machine for about 15 minutes. Then only plug the ac adapter up and hopefully the message stays away. If it does then that means the battery is good and your motherboard is good as well.

if you leave it off and then turn the laptop on and that error message comes back then you need to change out the motherboard.

Dell mini forced shut down, now runs slowly

go to start - accessories - system tools - system restore - choose a date when it was working fine, preferably the earliest date. then wait for it to shut down and restart. you will not lose any saved files or folders, you will only lose programs installed after the date you choose.

Cmos password for ibm r40

You will have to remember it. IBM puts a security chip on the motherboard, the bios password is burned into this, and there is no way around it. There are a few places that will replace the chip, but they are very expensive. The only other way is to replace the motherboard. I've found that replacing the motherboard is cheaper than having the chip replaced, so, if possible, remember the password.
