It should work. If not, there are jumpers on some drives. Not a DIY task because it requires unusual skills. Does not always work in any case.

you need to change the BIOS setup. Go to the booting menu change the arrangement of your hardware.
1.Primary Disk (Hard disk) 2.CD/DVD ROM 3. Floppy 4.others
then save and exit. Your PC will reboot and MUST detect first your hard drive to proceed to your desktop..
I hope it will help you..

You can tell by either checking the manufacturers site for the laptop specs, by looking at the existing drive if you're qualified to open it or by commenting back here with the required info, your Make and Model, so it's possible for us to look the info up for you if you're not sure how.

I would like to know if i can put a Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB Internal Hard Drive on a laptop? Thanks in advance.

Hello,
The answer is yes, if your BIOS will support a 500 G/B drive.
If you were running a 5400 and want to jump up to a 7200 NO PROBLEM.
If your BIOS supports SATA1 and 2.
You may have to use Disk Manager to setup the drive before hand.

Example, I am running a ASUS high speed M/B at home which only supports SATA1 and does not support SATA 2 drives.
The Speed in which I wanted was 100mb/sec
I had to negotiate down to half that.
It is fast for a SATA but not SATA2 fast.

Good luck, Check the specs. on your laptop and see what it will handle.

I can detect no SATA' HDD

The ECS PM800-M2 only supports SATA 1.0 hard drives. If you are using a newer SATA 3.0 hard drive, there is a jumper on the hard drive which has to be set to SATA 1.0 in order for the VIA 8237R chipset southbridge (which Is on your ECS PM800-M2) to recognize the newer SATA 3.0 hard drives. This Is applicable to all motherboards with the Viatech PM800 / 8237R chipsets. Note: the location for the SATA 1.0 / 3.0 jumper varies on each brand of hard drives. Also check If SATA Is enabled In the BIOS and select IDE mode.

P4VM800 SATA HDD Problem Plz Help me!!!

Check your user documentation for the hard drive to see if it has a user-accessible jumper that will switch it to 1.5Gb mode. I know that Seagate/Maxtor drives have a jumper they refer to as Force 150 and Western Digital calls their jumper OPT1 Enabled. If this option exists with this hard disk, it should solve your problem.

The A7V8X-LA motherboard only supports SATA1. Your new hard drive is likely SATA2 (SATA-II). You'll likely need to change jumpers on the drive to make it compatible with SATA1.

It's a tiny bit slower than SATA2 (okay, twice as slow). But, it's still faster than PATA (IDE).
