Question about GE JVM1650 1000 Watts Microwave Oven

1 Answer

GE JVM1650 truntable noise

I have a almost 6 yr old GE JVM1650 over the cooktop microwave. When the turntable is set to "on" and the microwave is turned on, it starts making some strange grinding kinda noise. Sometimes it stops after say 20-40 secs
and other instances the noise does not stop until the heating cycle is complete.

When the turntable is "off", there is no noise from the microwave.

Suggestions to fix this problem is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the turntable motor is going bad.

If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa:

Plate does not rotate freely and make noice

There is no belt in your model - the turntable is motor driven. The problem is either the motor itself or the coupling that engages the glass tray.
The motor (GE part # WB26X10038) is a very common failure as the internal gears are plastic and tend to strip.

You can view the motor at this link...

Does the turntable rotate? If everything but this works (except no heat), you probably have a bad door switch. Here's a discussion of what's involved in replacing it:

If the turntable does rotate, I'd suspect a more significant failure, such as the transformer, capacitor, or magnetron. If it's any of these, it's time to replace the unit.

GE Profile over the range microwave

It might be better to post this in the GE section, but I'll be happy to answer it here, too.

I would suspect a bad magnetron or high-voltage transformer, but it may be the turntable motor or an arcing stirrer.

If you can post back with the model number and a bit more detail on when and how it happens, we may be able to help you better.

GE over the range microwave making grinding noise

This sounds like the stirrer. If it sticks or stops, the microwaves can damage or destroy it. You may have a bad stirrer or magnetron. There is an important bulletin that covers these problems. To see if yours is covered, see: If you need more help, please follow-up.
