Did you disengage the choke? The choke is there only for tickover running and will choke (literally) the engine if you use it when the engine is hot. It reduces airflow and increases fuel.

I have a 1998 kawasaki 1500 classic that runs rich to the point where the fender is turning black. Riders behind say they smell strong odor of unburnt fuel. Bike idles smoothly and does not fog black out...


The easiest way to tell is have a look at the spark plugs and see what colour they are.
The should be a light brown, if black then you are running rich and will need to adjust your carbs.

Replaced head gasket bike runs on tickover smokes a lot and seems to b burning the engine oil and will not rev


Try a thorough carburetor cleaning. If the carburetors are not set correctly, are dirty, and feeding an overly rich fuel mixture (malfunctioning choke, or stuck open float needles) this can cause smoking and poor acceleration. If oil and anti freeze got into the exhaust during the rebuild that could also be a source of some of the smoke . Only a long drive will take care of that.

1200 zrx. starts but sounds like only running on 2 cylinders cuts out if you put choke of ?


Pull the plugs, if they are black dry and sooty those cylinders are running too rich which may be why it's cutting out when you put the choke on, it's getting too much fuel.

If they are wet and smell of gas you have no spark to those cylinders.

If it's carbuerated, then your idle jets or main jets are possibly clogged if the bike has not been run in awhile.

Could also be the coil is not firing to those two cylinders, check for spark first then check compression.

Check your choke cable adjustment also to make sure it's working properly.

Black dry deposits are indicitive of a very rich mixture. On your two stroke, rich is a asset but you can go too rich. It sounds like for some reason you're getting too much fuel.

I think I ran into something like this before on a Kawasaki 80. Check the screws that holds the choke plate inside the carb. They will come loose and allow the choke to close on you while riding the bike. If the screw comes out, it will go into the engine and cause serious damage. If the screws are loose, them out one at a time and put a drop of Loctite 271 (red) on them and reinstall them.

Check the float and the needle and seat to make sure that you don't have any trash in the needle and seat. Also check your tank vent. If the tank builds up vacuum, you could be running out of fuel. Sounds funny that you can be running rich but run out of fuel. The problem is that you run out of fuel so quickly that the carbon from the rich mixture doesn't have time to burn off.

its your choke. when the choke is to the left it will sputter around. try moving the choke completely to the right. mine does the same thing u just have to run the choke on the right side. i dont know if its supposed to be on the left or right but if u push it ALL the way to the right it should be fine. my kawasaki 360 prairie is pushin 55 mph so i think i have it set up right.- Kyle

Kawasaki GT 550 - erratic tickover


Put a carby kit through it and clean, inspect and blow all ports through, check intake rubbers for any leaks, (pin holes can change air fuel ratio) Especially check for obstructions in your idle/bypass jet, do the kit first so you know its right, then tune your idle mix until steady.
