Lexar JumpDrive Memory Stick Malfunction: ''format''msg now appears

My Lexar JumpDrive FireFly 2gb drive recently began acting up. When trying to browse the files in Windows Explorer/My Computer, a message appears stating the following: ''You need to format the disk in drive [F:] before you can use it.'' It then asks, ''Do you want to format it?''

I don't want to format and lose all the files stored on it. What can I do to recover my information and fix it?

    I had the same thought, however, My Computer [or any program that opens documents for that matter] will not allow me to access my files. When I try to view my files, the message I was referring to then appears. It's as if they were never there. Also, Microsoft's "AutoPlay" window no longer pops up automatically when the JumpDrive is plugged in and "Removable Disk" now appears in My Computer instead of the actual name of the drive "Lexar". I'll see what I can do. Thanks (More help is welcome here)!!!

    The only driver I found on Lexar's website was for using the Lexar JumpDrive with Window's 98. Where it was usually readable on both my work and home computers, and many others, it's giving me the same result on EVERY computer I use to try to access the files from in order to copy them [it wants me to format & device isn't recognized, regardless of which computer i use]. The problem began at work and I always eject my drive before removing. Maybe some IT operation wiped out my drive or something.

    I'll have to read up on the 'Disk Management' page some more and the steps to take for that process...

    When Right-clicking on the drive and going to Properties, it states under the 'General' tab:

    Type: Removable Disk
    File System: [blank]
    ______________________________________
    Used Space: 0 bytes 0 bytes
    Free Space: 0 bytes 0 bytes
    ______________________________________
    Capacity: 0 bytes 0 bytes


    ====================================================
    However, using System Information (System Information >> Storage >> Disks), I was able to get the following information for the Lexar 2gig:

    FYI...Also, I found that some Lexar 2gigs were recalled several years back in 2006, but I just bought my new model this winter from Wal-Mart, which has no recalls out. Thanks again, these files are important... and yes it's quite a pain!

Unfortunately, this is an occurring problem.
What I had to do was save all my files on my friend's computer, format the flash drive into NTFS and then throw the files back on.
It only takes a minute, but what a pain in the ****.

    You could try reinstalling the drivers.
    Was there something you installed prior to this problem?
    What does disk management show you?
    I know how important it is not to lose data, so post another comment and let me know if that helped.

    The last thing I can recommend is this.
    I browsed through Microsoft Support and I came upon it.
    I hope this one finally works out. Apparently WIndows likes to think two drives have one letter from time to time, creating a major snafu.
    I recommend you bookmark the page, as I have, in case this happens again.

If you have files on the stick and it asks for formatting, the file system is probably damaged. Try a quick format on the USB-stick. DO NOT save any files to the stick. Use a file recover tool on it, like example: Piriform's Recuva. Use the Deep Scan function.

    I have heard this sometimes happens on Lexar JD Firefly's, my 2gb version did the same and held very important files. got them recovered.

How to format Lexar JD USB


Insert the flash drive in a USB slot and see what drive letter gets assigned to it. Right click on the new drive letter and select format from the drop down menu. Follow the directions on the next screen to format the drive.

I have a jumpdrive4usbgb. I want to transfer a file from my desktop pc to my new laptop pc. how do I do this?


insert the jumpdrive in your desktop pc and copy the contents from the pc to the jumpdrive... then insert the jumpdrive into the laptop pc and then copy the contents from the jumpdrive and paste it in your laptop pc at the specified place..

Empty your "Recycle Bin", to permanently detect some "hidden" files on the JumpDrive.

If necessary, try a "quick-Format" to reformat the drive, deleting all "hidden" files.

I deleted all the viewable files and folders on my lexar firefly jumpdrive, but it says that i still have almost all my memory used up. how can I clear it?


You may have hidden or locked files. If the files are locked, you'll see an icon to unlock them when you open the JumpDrive in Windows Explorer. If the files are hidden, try and show them: Tools-->Folder Options-->View--> Left Click "show hidden files and folders" Good Luck!

Usb keeps ask for formatting why? please


On brand new USB disks sometimes, from value companies, they may require a formatting, I assume it is a new USB memory stick, allow it to format to "NTFS" if that is not an option let it format to "FAT32" Hope this helps.

Hi there, I'm having problems opening the files on Lexar 2GB JumpDrive FireFly it just says not formatted do you want to format? Please help I have precious photos etc. Thanks


If it says that the files are probably gone, sorry. Try using it on a different system, if it says the same thing they are definitely gone. Good luck I hope it works on a different system.

Just install the driver to your computer, you can get it from http://www.lexar.com/drivers/index.html. Installation procedure can can found from http://www.lexar.com/drivers/instruct_win.html. After that, you now use you USB memory card.

Please show me step by step on using the Lexar 2GB JumpDrive FireFly flash drive. I have an HP computer. I need to back up many photos. I will buy more of the same flash drives if I learn how to use them....


What operating system are you using? Should work with XP and Vista. Go to windows explorer and click on C drive, click photos folder, select required photo, click and drag icon to the Firefly icon and release mouse button. File should be copied to jump drive.
