Pop ups and its slow

Well it can be many reasons why it's slow, but I have a few things you could do that may help.
First make sure you have security for your system. Microsoft Security Essentials is free. It can guard your system from viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. Below is some of my notes from college on speeding up your computer. I hope this helps.

================================================
Indexing service is a little program that uses a large amount of RAM. The program indexes and list files that are on your computer so when you do a search for things on your computer it can find it faster by scanning the index list. You don't need this service so to disable it.

Go to start
settings
control panel
add/remove programs
add/remove windows components
uncheck the index services
click next

Optimize display settings

visual items can waste system resources
to optimize:

start
settings
control settings
control panel
system
advanced tab
in the performance tab click settings
leave only the following ticked

show shadows under menus
show shadows under mouse pointer
show translucent selection rectangle
used drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
use visual styles on windows and buttons

Speedup folder browser

when you open mycomputer the slight delay is because win xp searches for network files and printers every time you open windows explorer

mycomputer
tools folder options
view tab
uncheck the automatically search for network folders and printers check box
click apply
click ok
reboot comp

Remove the Desktop Picture

Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.

Right click on Desktop and select Properties
Select the Desktop tab
In the Background window select None
Click Ok

Remove Fonts for Speed

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

Open Control Panel
Open Fonts folder
Move fonts you don't need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

Free up disk space
The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk to improve the performance of your computer. The tool identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.

Use Disk Cleanup to:

Remove temporary Internet files.

Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Remove Windows temporary files such as error reports.

Remove optional Windows components that you don't use.

Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

Remove unused restore points and shadow copies from System Restore.

Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.

Speed up access to data
Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. The response time can be significantly longer.

Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.

When to run Disk Defragmenter
In addition to running Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals-monthly is optimal-there are other times you should run it too, such as when:

You add a large number of files.

Your free disk space totals 15 percent or less.

You install new programs or a new version of Windows.

I want to remove wgs from my desktop

there are a few ways to do this.
Either upgrade to a newer addition and it will automatically overwrite the previous data.
Go to control panel, and add/remove programs and remove it.
Go to start menu, run, type regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, and go to software tab and expand it. Find the file and delete it. Also do this under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and go under software and find the file and delete it.
Go to start menu, search, once the file is found, delete it.

Scanner problems

This worked for me. You want to start fresh so delete your HP printer in "Printers and Faxes". Also delete any HP software that loaded in Control Panel "Add and Remove Programs". Next in Control Panel under "Add and Remove Programs", the "Add and Remove Windows Components" TAB, check mark the file to add called "Other Network File and Print Services". After clicking next, the extra print files will load. Reload your software/ HP drivers and it should be fine.

I get this error everytime I try and use IE I can't use IE it wont launch runtime error! program:c:\program files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe this application has requested the runtime to...

you can try to re-install IE, go to control panel then open Add/Remove programs, on the left side of the Add/Remove programs applet click Add/Remove windows components, under Components look for internet explorer then uncheck it then click next, IE will now be uninstalled. Then reinstall it, just like previous process on Add/Remove windows components put a check on internet explorer then click next.

If this wont solve the problem, you can try a third party browser like firefox, download firefox on this site: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/, after downloading firefox just double-click it then just follow the installation.

Click Start, click Run, type Regedit (hit enter)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,System,CurrentControlSet,Services --

Remove ICSharing key

Under Class, noted number of folders under NETTRANS key.

Don’t close, just go to next step.

Under Network properties:

Add protocol called NETBEUI

Remove all instances of TCP/IP

Click OK DO NOT reboot.

Back to Regedit, press F5 to refresh the screen. Remove all folders under NETTRANS key that WERE there before. Do not remove the new keys. They might be at the end, or in the middle. Don’t remove the new NETBEUI folders.

Back in Network properties, add the TCP/IP protocol. Be sure that File and Printer Sharing is not present (this is a must), and delete the NETBEUI protocols.

Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/Windows Setup – Communications – select ICS. Click OK, Click OK.

ICS should run perfectly. Then open network properties and add File and Printer sharing.
