My Yaseu FT-50R doesn't stay on. I have to remove the battery, then re-insert it and sometimes this will turn the radio on. now it is simply dead, acts like it doesn't have power. battery voltage is 8.0 volts. thanks,

Darned resistive silicone contacts! This link will help you:http://www.sdarc.net/forum/printer_friendly_posts.asp?TID=828 There are kits available that "rebuild" the carbon conductive layer, should cleaning not help. It's like (car) rear defogger repair kit material. I haven't had long term success with the two part repair kits, myself. I didn't read the link myself, but cleaning with alcohol often works. If not, try acetone. If that doesn't work, a conductive kit or sticky aluminum tape may help. If cleaning doesn't work, and replacement is available from Yaesu, order it! Darned these silicone contact pads! Same pads as most remote controls.
