Central air just stopped running, was running all day. I turned down the thermostat about an hour ago and I heard it come on. I noticed it wasn't running just a little while ago. Looked an the thermostat says it is 78 while the aircon is set for 72. It wont come back on I tried resting the thermostat and checking the breakers. I even switched the furnace off on the side. The furnace is about 30 years old...

Possible you have a bad contactor switch.. Have a tech look at this since it is dangerous due to high voltage and age of unit

Good Luck

Running the equipment on 72 degrees would cause the compressor and fan to work harder on hot days. This will definitely place more strain on your capacitor. These capacitor problems usually happen on the hottest days. I would suspect the capacitor, not the fan. I'm an HVAC tech, so I would Check both with my multimeter

Whirlpool model WC260A-1A cannot find manual and central air conditioner will not turn on worked well 2 days ago.

Does the fan turn on when you have it set to cool? does the furnace still work? Does the fan auto, and on options still work?(for example when on its on, when auto, and neither the cool or heat functions should be running, the fan is off)? Basicly i'm asking your to test your thermostat right now.

RUUD AC cycles warm & cold 24/7

Hello Anna Sounds like the compressor is overheating and stoping on overload internally. Then it cools down restarts and runs into overload again.I would like to see the freon pressures when running.Could have a clog/restriction in piping.I dont like that you went thru a compressor already, the original installition is suspect. The original (1st) failure cause must be corrected.Check the TXV valve replace, filter/dryer look for a kinked pipe are ideas for overheating.Make sure condenser coil is free (ari flow)& clean also.

We do not know how to turn the whole house fan on. Does it work through the thermostat on the walll for the air- heat switch?

To turn on your whole house fan, got to you thermostat. Open the door and look for where it says fan, most will have a selector switch to select "auto" or "on". You want it "auto for it to work properly with your furnace and or central air. If you flip it to "on" it will run 24 hours a day none stop, warning this may shorten the life of your fan a little.

Day / Night HVAC is running cool air BUT the furnace is running 2

Strange. Does the thermostat control both the air conditioning units and the furnace. If not make sure the furnace thermostat is turned down to below 65 degrees.

Central Air Compressor Runs Constantly

Sounds like the contactor is stuck in the outside unit. Turn off the breaker or safety switch, remove the cover, and tap on the body of the contactor with a hammer handle or similar tool. If a click is heard you may have dislodged it and it may work for either a short time or indefinitely. (yeah ,I know that's kinda vague) Test it. If that doesn't clear it up, disconnect the thermostat wires just to make sure and re-test. If the compressor starts without the thermostat connected, you will need to replace the contactor. If you feel real handy, you could perhaps remove the cover, seperate the contacts with a screwdriver, dress the contacts with an emery board until smooth and shiny, and try again.
