DVD/CD combo drive will read but bot write

• DVD/CD-RW combo drive
• 8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive.

But you have the first one, The Combo drive not the super so you can READ both CD's DVD's but can write only CD's.

the system you have is an old system and DELL doesn't manufacture it any more.
the thing is that INSPIRON 1000 is a system in which you cannot take out anything as its bit complicated.
as its turning hot wot you can do is use a air compressed can and try cleaning areas near vents
if it doesn't fixes the problem try logging on to

punchin your system's service tag
you will get list of drivers you have to download and install BIOS from that list
when you run that BIOS update make sure that the battery is in and ac adapter is plugged in
and still if it doesn't fix the problem get the system board,fan and heatsink assembly replaced and offcourse cd drive too.

wel the driver should be the same for all of them sounds like your driver for cdrw is about kaput or shot mite need cleanig or a new cdrw installed.

you should be able to find another optical drive for the computer quite easily and cheaply. Try reinstalling the driver for the dvd. Do not spin your fan with compressed air as you will damage it.

Hi, sorry you might need to explain a little better, but i will try. The DVD Combo drive doesnt need any drivers to work, the only thing you need is somthing like powerdvd to watch films, if the drive is not reading cds or dvds and in device manager you have a yellow tag, probably next to Primary ide its windows drivers, but if you could explain in a little more detail will be happy to help..
