    Hi Benimur,

My switch is OK and it does work correctly. This has been a problem before and I was able to successfully repair it. The actuating lever when hit with the out of balance drum does trip the microswitch and stop the machine as it should. There is no problem there. The problem is that the drum is so seriously out of balance at all. This has not always been the case. That is why I am thinking that there is another issue that is not allowing the drum to balance as it should or at least reduce the out of balance thrashing around that it is experiencing.

The blue 'tank' attached to the top of the wash drum has some water? in it and I was thinking that this may be a balancing device to assist the drum in staying in balance (gyro effect???). As there is not much fluid in the tank I am not sure if perhaps it has had a leak? Are you able to advise how much fluid is supposed to be in the tank and if mine requires more, then perhaps I need to repair it and top up the fluid... Could you please advise.

    Thanks John Timermanis

The out of balance the machine experiences is a fairly strong thrashing of the wash drum. The out of balance switch, its mount and the actuator are all fine. Bearings and mounts appear to be fine, no grinding noise or anything of that nature. When and if the drum can get itself into balance, it is smooth and the drum is able to reach a fairly high RPM. The bias spring on the front side of the drum and diagonally opposite the out of balance switch does appear to be a very light spring and not particularly useful for anything. Personally, I would have put a far heavier spring on it. I still need to know if the tank around the top of the wash drum is supposed to be full or half full of water or fluid. It looks to me to be some sort of balancing damper device that perhaps acts as some sort of gyro to stabilise the drum when it's spinning. The previous person who attempted to assist me thought I may have been talking about the fabric softener cup arrangement on the agitator. No I that was not what I meant. The blue plastic tank is quite clearly a water talk of sorts that clips on to the top of the wash drum and spins with it. I would really like to know more about this item, its purpose and how much fluid it is supposed to have in it.... Would appreciate any help I can get on this. Thanks John T

Make sure the machine is level, use a level on two planes and adjust the feet to achieve a level operating condition.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

On several models of Fisher and Paykel, the out of balance could either be caused by a faulty switch (most likely) or the mounting bracket (least likely) for the switch has deformed / out of alignment or developed a crack and therefore triggers falsely the warning message. While the parts are readily available and are simple enough, it is the dis-assembly to gain access to the switch / mounting that maybe of a challenge. Should you be interested, the bracket / mount may be viewed here while the switch may be checked out here. The switch could be checked for continuity using a multitester but the mounting bracket has to be visually inspected.

This of course is assuming that the washing machine has been checked for evenness of load and that it does not exceed the load limit of the machine.

Options then are:

  • consider a DIY (do-it-yourself) repair if and only if very familiar with electrical / electronic components & circuitry, use of a DVM/VOM and safe working practices with electrically powered equipment. Access to a Service Manual or at the very least, a schematic diagram would be an advantage;
  • should you be uncomfortable with a DIY, perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of an authorized Service Center (specially if still under warranty) or a qualified professional.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Appreciate your postback and additional information.

To my understanding, there would be a counter spring  attached to the tub pullig it forward. Check and determine if still atcched and doing its function.Another possibility to consider would be the main support bearing but that would cause a metallic grinding noise.

Sorry on the fluid reservoir. On the F & P models in my country, I can only think of what you described for fabric softener and/or detergents.

Hi - you have possibly some restrictions in/around your smart pump unit, inside is a flapper valve suppose to control flow in both directions, often this gets the rough treatments.

Be careful if you wish to have a nosy its located beneath the smart agitator.

Whats a code 43 on a Fisher Paykel Intuitive top loader washing machine mean

That's an 'out of balance' switch problem. Typically caused by a crook microswitch that lives under the main processor housing. Can replace with a generic switch from Jaycar or similar if needed.

What is error code 136 on a fisher & paykel IW709AU top load washer

136 fault is 'motor stall'...Quite often this is a broken wire to the motor. However it could also be a Motor fault, or Rotary Position Sensor problem. Water damage can cause this fault as well. After a visual check for broken wires or water damage, and if your machine is in good condition, you should consider a tech....Good luck...Nomess

Out of balance during wash

Ok you need to check your machine is level- if not adjust feet. You aslo need to check the Bias spring is still attached if not get a new one or re-attach it. The Bias spring is a little spring that connects from the top of the front left suspention rod to the top of the plastic bowl cover (this spring is meant to help stop it going out of balance so easy. Cheers
