Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

Freezer won't stay cold. it remains at about 10 deg, not 0 deg like it is set for. fridge seems to be warmer than set point also, but not as extreme. GE model PDW22SISRSS.

Three possible reasons, you have a main control board inside the fresh food section that may be defective. It's hiding behind the controls, then the defrost heater and defrost thermostat inside the freezer. I think I found the board replacement. we just need to look at the board with power unplugged to fridge. We will go from there if you need my help please double check the model number. I found 2 similar numbers but not yours. I will walk you through this if you want, let me know, Thanks Sea Breeze

zstelly I did a bit more digging and found that the compressor was smoking hot! It appears that the fan that cools the coils is not working. I set up a small house fan blowing over the coils and the fridge and freezer temps seem to be right on the money, 37 and 0 degs. I was able to get the fan out thinking it would be 110v and easy to test, but it is a 12v DC motor so I have no way to test it. Also I am a bit confudsed because the fan has 4 leads. As far as the model number goes it is PDW22SISR SS. My wife just read it to me from the fridge. The funy thing is that the model number is on a small sticker, covering another "model" number. It almost looks like they printed the lable with the wrong model number and had to put a correction sticker over it. anyway, the number under the sticker is PDS22SISR SS. I hope this helps. Thanks again

Sea Breeze That fan motor is quite expensive everywhere. Can you set you meter on DC voltage and check the wires for 12 volts to make sure it's not a relay somewhere bad. The part number for the motor is

Send me the Name Brand of that model number so I can look over some prints. Sea Breeze

zstelly Should the fan run when the compressor is running? or is it triggered by a temp sensor?

    Thanks
    Sea Breeze
On most simple designed refrigerators they run while the compressor and freezer fan runs. But on refrigerators with a mother board the usually have a temperature sensor that stops and starts the fan depending on the temperature of the condenser. A mother board controls almost all functions on the newer style refrigerators.. They cost more to replace but the save you money over time by controlling defrost time and even knows how many times the door was opened during the day.. I will need to look your model up to see exactly what you have.
I am pretty sure the PS22 falls in the category of the Artica/Profile If you question the board being good you can unplug and examine both sides of your boards for burn marks or signs of heat or loose solder.
Here is one possibly similar to yours in 2002 http://www.fixya.com/support/t230703-ge_...

Have a look at this PDF of the Profile/Artica service manual. I realize it may be a little different but the boards and wiring may be close enough to go by. Sea breeze Trying to get the manual for the PDS22SISRSS may be very difficult because GE don't like to let their manuals out.

zstelly I just got my hands on a volt meter and checked the power leads to the condenser fan. I am reading 13.5v when metering across white/red and white/purple.. It seems like it is a bad fan, right?

    Thanks
Sea Breeze Yes, now check the resistance in the two pin plug connections that go to fan. In The PDF it said something about checking the fan condenser motor around page 46.

zstelly I ran through the diagnostics on page 49 and ended up at the "repair wiring harness" box. I tested the harness with an Ohm meter and it and everything was good. So I did a bit more probing. 13.5v on pins 3-5 and 3-8. 13.5v at motor. When testing resistance across red and white on the J2 connector, I was only reading 1kOhm. Any ideas?

Sea Breeze I believe now that you have gone this far you need to unplug the refrigerator and examine both sides of the board for burn marks. Without me pulling up the PDF again what did it tell you the ohm's should be?
See if you can set your ohm meter to a more sensitive setting and try. And the resistance on the fan motor across the 2 pin plug locations you tested the power from is what? If you plug the fan up to a 12 volt battery like your car will it run?

We just bought a Frigidaire Gallery Refrigerator and are not sure what temperatures to set the freezer and fridge to.

The freezer should be between -5 to +5 deg.F. The refrigerator should be from 33 to 40 deg. F. but it is really a matter of preference. I set mine around 5 and 33. I like to get my ice cream out and be able to scoop it and I like my milk very cold. Start with the manufacture suggested and then adjust from there with your own preference.

Gladiator fridge/freezer-freezer not cold enough, stays at 10 deg

Hi,

As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong. If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.
