Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop

1 Answer

My Dell Dimension 4600 needs to be reformatted. The Dell reinstallation OS disk boots up and gets as far as "Windows Setup....press Enter to continue". Then it freezes. I have tried using both the original disk and a copy. (I had to use a copy on my older Dell 4100 as the original disk would not boot.) What options do I have.

Thanks, but I have already done that. The hard drive had no problems, was just slow and loaded with junk. This was to be a maintenance reformat. I've read that Dell discs can be problematic. It is no longer under warrenty.

Before you go ahead and try reformatting the system , Please disconnect everything from the system (Except Mouse, Keyboard and screen)
and then try to use the disc to reformat the system. and if it still hangs up or freezes up that clearly seems to be a hard drive failure.

Hope this help.
Cheers!!!!

Trying to reformat my DELL Dimension 4600-the wizard stops the process because SP 3 was added later--any ideas besides the old format c: command? nothing on the DELL site that I could find. Thank you in...

Go into BIOS Setup, (Dell's term is System Setup), and in Boot Options set the first boot device, to CDROM. Don't forget to Save Changes.

(After you see the Dell logo, {AND I mean IMMEDIATELY AFTER}, press the F2 key to enter System Setup)

Cannot reformat Dimensions 4600 I tried F11 but it won't let me restart

If you are going to reinstall the operating system on the dimension 4600, while it is on insert the Operating System CD inside the drive then press and hold the power button to turn off system. When you turn it back on press the F12 Key once on the Dell Logo and that will take you to the Boot Menu. Choose the one that says IDE or Onboard CD / DVD Drive then press enter. If it asks you to press any key to boot to the CD then press enter again. Then just follow the normal prompts for reinstalling the operating system.

Windows will not boot up

Hello.

If you got a Windows CD try the following...

Reboot the computer and enter bios by..
When the blue DELL™ logo appears, press <F2> immediately
You might have to try this a few times since you have to be really quick,

In system setup (bios)
Set CD Drive as first device in the boot sequence. Press F10 then chose "Y" to save.

Reboot.

When asked if you want to start on CD just press any key.

The menu on your cd should have a repair option.

Hope this helps.

DELL reformating

On boot press the key that will open your BIOS (usually flashes which key this option for a second or two on boot, or just press F1, F2, and the delete key on boot) and set the boot order to CD ROM drive first, then with the Windows CD/DVD in your CD's tray reboot and look for a prompt to press any key to boot to the CD and press a key. This prompt will only show for a few seconds, so you have to be quick. Once booting to the CD you should get to the format and partition screen where you can delete partitions, create new ones, and then format the one you want to reinstall your OS on and the rest should be easy.

Reformatting

I assume you want to reformat it and then reinstall some sort of operating system. The esiest way to do this is to reformat it during the reinstallation of the operating system. If you are using Windows XP, it gives you the option of using FAT32 or NTFS file system to format the drive. If you are using Windows 98 or ME, you can boot to the CD and use the fdisk/format commands found on the CD.
